As players make their way through Dragon Quest 3 Remake, those new to the game will likely have several questions about how the party system works. As a game with turn-based combat, the party system is at the heart of the experience. And while the game's longtime fans will no doubt be aware of its default settings, new players will not have to look far. In this instance, Dragon Quest 3 Remake does not automatically give players control over their whole party, instead, opting for an automatic setting. This guide will show players how and when they can control and command the party in Dragon Quest 3 Remake.

How to Control Your Party in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

DQ3-Party-Control-Header

When you first enter combat in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, you'll notice that the default setting has the computer automatically deciding all party member's actions except for the Hero, which is controlled by the player. This is not addressed early in the game, and unless you know exactly where to look, you may not even realize that you have the option to control each party member in DQIII Remake.

All the settings that deal with party control, including those that allow you to command individual members, are found in the Tactics section of the combat menu.

DQ3-Tactics-Menu

When you first find yourself in a combat encounter in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, you will see a small menu pop-op in the lower left portion of the HUD. This menu will have three options:

  • Fight
  • Tactics
  • Flee

To set party command to your desired position, select the Tactics option.

The Tactics menu will bring up a list of your party, with a corresponding setting that details what their roles in combat will be. By default, the three NPC members of the party will be set to 'Fight Wisely.' This setting is meant to take a balanced approach to both offense and defense. There are several other settings which will be detailed below.

If you wish to allow the computer to take over, you can have a wide range of presets to choose from. You can set all party members, even the Hero, to the same setting, or give each member a different focus. The complete list is as follows:

  • Show No Mercy! - completely offensive focus.
  • Fight Wisely – balanced approach, split evenly between offensive and defensive focus.
  • Focus on Healing – as it sounds, member/s will focus on healing enemies over attacking
  • Don't Use MP – conserve MP when running low, won't use magic.
  • Watch My Back – supports the player with healing, buffs, and more.
  • Follow Orders – the player has complete control over member/s.
