Dragon Quest 2: Luminaries of the Legendary Line was released in North America on the NES in 1990, and now it’s back via a collection, Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, on Switch 2, PS5, and several other platforms. Three decades is a long time, and obviously, a lot has changed, while many of the core features remain the same, which is good for Dragon Quest fans.

How Long to Beat All Missions in Dragon Quest 1 & 2 Remake

A complete list of all missions in both Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D remakes, and how long it will take to beat them both individually.

For example, no matter what difficulty level players engage with, it will be hard to gain EXP and Gold at a fast rate. For anyone struggling to make Gold in particular, which is the currency of Dragon Quest 2 Remake, here are a few suggestions to obtain it faster.

Equipment to Boost Gold Acquisition

Before starting the hunt for Gold, like many brave warriors on the hunt to beef up their coin purses in RPGs, there are two pieces of gear that will aid Dragon Quest 2 Remake players. In the starting area around Midenhall, players can find and fight Bunicorns, which are a classic enemy type in the series. They’re weak and won’t offer much EXP or Gold, but there is a chance they will drop a Rabbit Tail.

A Rabbit Tail is an accessory that, when equipped, can boost the player’s Luck as hinted at in the description. A higher Luck in an RPG like Dragon Quest 2 Remake means players can score better critical hits and have a better chance for enemies to drop items. The monster information tab can tell players what each monster will drop, which will become important later. If players don’t want to wait for a random Rabbit Tail, then they can always buy one from a vendor at the Shrine West of Moonbrooke, which is an early location.

Getting the Arriviste’s Vest

Another important piece of equipment requires a bit of waiting as players have to progress until they get their third party member, Peronel. She’s a gifted mage, one of the strongest in the Dragon Quest series, and after getting her, players can revisit Peronel’s destroyed castle to find the Thief’s Key. This will allow players to unlock specific red chests and red doors, which players are probably familiar with at this point in the game.

Here's what to do with the Mini-Medals and Tombola Tickets you collect in Dragon Quest

One of the first places players should revisit after getting the Thief’s Key is Leftwyne, specifically the Inn. Inside the first room is a chest with the Arriviste’s Vest inside. Not only is this item a good piece of defensive armor, but it will also increase the Gold acquired in battle. With one character equipping this and each party member holding at least one Rabbit’s Tail, the Gold hunt can properly begin in Dragon Quest 2 Remake.

Farming Wizard's Staffs

Before players can even get the Thief’s Key, they will need to go into the Wellspring of the Hero dungeon for the story. It’s one of the first big dungeons in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, wherein Caradoc’s sister, Matilda, will accompany the Hero as a temporary party member. Inside, players will fight a lot of big wizard-looking characters called Maguses. Like the Bunicorn, the Magus can drop a useful item as well: the Wizard's Staff.

This piece of gear is useful in battle because when used as an item, it can shoot fireballs. Dragon Quest 2 Remake's Hero cannot use spells naturally for many hours of the game, which makes this cheat useful in a pinch. More importantly, a Wizard's Staff can sell for 250 Gold at a shop. So, if players are lucky, they can farm this item and sell it for a profit. It may be wise to return to this dungeon after acquiring Caradoc, as that way, players can farm Wizard's Staffs easier with three party members, including Matilda, or even wait longer to return with Peronel instead.

An Early Enemy to Exploit

Not many enemies will drop a ton of Gold early in the game, or even later. There are some exceptions, though, and the desert area around Oasis just so happens to have two useful enemies to farm. First, players will want to find the anthropomorphic bag enemies, Bag O’Laughs, which will drop 121 Gold per kill. For this stage in the game, that may as well be a million pieces of Gold.

Bag O’Laughs are a bit rarer as an enemy type, but players can speed up the process of battle by using the Whistle spell, which Caradoc can learn at level twelve. This will start a random battle, as Dragon Quest 2 Remake is still one of those classic RPGs with random encounters. Just keep using Whistle, fight enemies, and when players need to heal, they can rest in Oasis, which is a small camp town.

The Loyalty Card

The other enemy players will want to encounter is called a Mummy Boy, which looks like a classic mummy enemy. Mummy Boys have the chance to drop Tombola Tickets, which are a rare sub-currency used at Tombola vendors. The first one that players can find is in Moonahan, while the second is in Oasis, with the latter of the two locations having the better grand prize. If players are lucky, they can get the Loyalty Card, which is a Key Item that can lower the price of all items that vendors sell in the game.

Getting a discount card within the first few hours of an RPG is clutch. After getting at least ten Tombola Tickets, players should save, play a round of Tombola, and if they don’t get a Loyalty Card, then they should reload. Also, players should be putting Gold aside in banks periodically to keep their horde safe. Dragon Quest is a hard series because Gold can be lost upon death, and it cannot be recovered. Between banks and the Loyalty Card, these two tips will decrease the Gold lost or spent, which is akin to finding an easy way to specifically earn it.

Reselling Gear

Those are the basic early ways players can farm Gold, and as players progress further, they can find more exotic locations with tougher enemies to grind for both EXP and Gold. No one enemy is a major vault keeper of Gold in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, as players will instead have to rely on the resell method to earn the most cash. More importantly, the best treasure in the game is locked behind doors and requires Key Items.

The aforementioned Thief’s Key is the first tool players can find, and there are several more story-based items after that to open blue doors, green chests, and so on. Whenever players encounter a locked door or chest, they should take a screenshot of the location to remind themselves to return later. This is a tip Metroidvania fans can apply to their games as well whenever new abilities are learned. These locked areas contain high amounts of Gold or rare items to boost the party’s stats. Sometimes, there will be duplicate items, which players can then resell on top of monster drops.
