Weirdwood is a location in Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake that players must pass through in order to gather the items required to make the remaining sigils. This location can be quite confusing, though, and players may be unclear about how to get through it. Additionally, there is a fight against three Mirages in Dragon Quest 1 Remake's Weirdwood, and may give players some trouble.
Players can only pass through the Weirdwood after rescuing Princess Gwaelin and obtaining the Princess's Necklace, which occurs as part of Dragon Quest 1's story.
How to Get Through Weirdwood in Dragon Quest 1 HD Remake
The goal upon entering the Weirdwood is to trigger a cutscene in which Dragon Quest's Hero is contacted by Gwaelin. While it is possible to reach that cutscene simply by wandering around within the area, here is a way to trigger it consistently:
- Enter Weirdwood.
- Walk up, and go left at the fork.
- Use the first path on the right to continue upward, and go right at the fork.
- Use the first path on the left to continue upward, veering to the right.
- Follow this path until you hit a loading zone, which will send you to the beginning of the Weirdwood.
- Repeat Steps 2–4 two times to trigger the cutscene.
How to Beat Mirages in Dragon Quest 1 HD Remake
After reaching the Weirdwood cutscene, Dragon Quest players can follow the path upward to initiate a fight with three Mirages. This can be quite a difficult encounter, and it is recommended that players be at least Level 25 before they attempt it. Once a player has reached that level, they can use this strategy to take on the Mirages:
Preparation
Not only should players reach Level 25+ before taking on the Mirages, they should also make these preparations:
- Make your equipment current, equipping items like the Tempest Shield (blue chest in Faerie Village), the Phantom Mask (blue chest in Citadel of the Monarch of Medals), and the Tectonic Plate (beyond the blue door in Cave of the Dwarves - B3).
- Load the Hero up with Antidotal Herbs and healing items (Special and Strong Medicines), and plan to use them in combat.
- Learn the Crackle spell. Players can learn this spell by using a scroll that is found in a chest in a building in the Faerie Village.
The Fight
With the proper preparations made, players should take this approach to the fight:
- If you are above 120 HP, not envenomated, and can cast Spells: cast Crackle.
- If you are above 120 HP, not envenomated, but cannot cast Spells: use the Defending Champion ability.
- If you are below 120 HP: use a healing item.
- If you are envenomated: use an Antidotal Herb.
The idea here is to repeatedly cast Crackle, while using Defending Champion, healing items, and Antidotal Herbs to stay healthy without using much MP, and kill all three Mirages simultaneously. Indeed, dispatching all the enemies at the same time will prevent them from calling for backup, a maneuver that is very difficult to deal with at Level 25. If the Mirages do not go down at once, simply keep fighting, initiate a rematch if you die, and try again.
It is possible to win this fight even if the initial three Mirages do not go down simultaneously. This is why players are advised to keep fighting in that situation, as they may find that they can get through a few backups with more Crackles and standard Attacks.
