Players will start encountering red doors and chests very soon after starting Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake. Players will not be able to unlock those doors and chests immediately, though, as they must obtain a special key first. This guide is here to provide information about that key, while also detailing the location of every red door and chest in Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake.
The locations section in this guide is a work-in-progress and will be updated in the upcoming days.
How to Open Red Doors & Chests in Dragon Quest 1 Remake
Players will be able to unlock red doors and chest after obtaining the Thief's Key, an important item that is earned as part of Dragon Quest 1's main quest. More specifically, after visiting the Shrine of Rain, players will be sent to Galenholm, the Roadside Inn, and Craggy Cave, and they will receive the Thief's Key at the end of that final location.
All Red Door & Chest Locations in Dragon Quest 1 Remake

Tantegel

Galenholm
The building at the north edge of Galenholm has a red door. There is a dock beyond that door, and there is a red chest that holds an Arriviste's Vest on its right end.
Additionally, Dragon Quest players will find a blue door in the room beyond the red door, and they should return to it after they have earned a suitable key. There is also a path that leads to the Grave a Galen, an area in which you can find a mini medal, the Whistle scroll, and more.
Kol

Cave of the Dwarves
Upon entering the Cave of the Dwarves, head up and to your left to find a red door. Descend the stairs beyond that door to reach B2, and head to the bottom-left corner to find barrels that hold an Oaken Club, a Ten Ton Toupee, and a Fur Vest. Then climb the stairs on the right side of the area and follow the path to reach a chest with an Ice Shield.
There is a second red door in Caves of the Dwarves - B1, and players will use it to access the rest of the dungeon.
After obtaining the blue key, players can also visit B3 and open the blue door in the top-right corner. There are two red chests in the room beyond that door, and they hold a Strength Ring and a suit of Tectonic Plate.
Citadel of the Monarch of Medals
There are two red chests in the Citadel of the Monarch of Medals, one that holds a Phial of Sage's Elixir and the other that holds the Reheal scroll. There are also blue and green chests in the area to be opened when the appropriate keys have been obtained.
