The June 18th Nintendo Direct broadcast highlighted the Dragon Quest franchise with announcements for Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. The former was announced to be released in 2025, while D ragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake's highly anticipated release date was announced for November 14, 2024.
The third game in the Dragon Quest franchise is one of the best known, being the beginning of The Erdrick Trilogy. It was originally announced during the franchise's 35th anniversary, which honored every game in the Dragon Quest series. The developers announced that it will have gameplay based on the style of Octopath Traveler. While it's an HD remake, players can still expect the original graphics in vibrant HD-2D. The same can be said for the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, which are entirely different beasts on their own. There's a reason why the third game starts a completely different narrative.

Dragon Quest Remakes Take Over the Switch
The Dragon Quest franchise has two trilogies, starting with The Erdrick Trilogy. If not released for modern consoles, most of the later games have had some kind of remake that was released on the most modern console at the time. The Zenithian Trilogy, which includes Dragon Quest 4, 5, and 6 was the first of the games to be remade for the Nintendo DS. Even those not part of a trilogy, like Dragon Quest 7, 8, and 9 had remakes released on the 3DS. It's great news that Dragon Quest 3 has an official release date on modern consoles, considering the long wait due to producer Yu Miyake stepping down.
Both Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake are likely to be highly anticipated by fans, especially considering Dragon Quest 12 was announced during the 35th anniversary livestream. Franchise creator Yuji Horii explained that the game will be much darker than previous games with a new battle system different from the classic turn-based system. With the release of the former two, new fans will be introduced just in time for the next game.
