Since the announcement of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Bandai Namco's upcoming RPG has been met with widespread acclaim. Long have fans waited for a proper action RPG set in the Dragon Ball universe as the last decade, despite being well-received, has been filled with nothing but fighting games from the Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 to Dragon Ball FighterZ. Based on everything we know about Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, it looks like fans won't have to wait much longer.
Last week, two new Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot playable characters were announced expanding the roster from the titular hero - Kakarot or Goku, as many will know him, to Gohan, Piccolo, Trunks, and Vegeta. It's now been confirmed that another fan-favorite character will be playable: Vegito. Making any character playable is a pretty big deal, particularly alongside Goku and Vegeta, so who exactly is Vegito and why is he so special?
Who is Vegito?
Vegito was first introduced in the Fusion Saga of Dragon Ball Z during the ongoing battle against Super Buu. After Old Kai gives his life force to Goku and sends him back to Earth, Goku is no match for Super Buu as a Super Saiyan 3 and Buu manages to take out Tien and absorb Gohan. Believing that fusion is the only way to defeat Super Buu and desperate to find someone powerful enough, Goku teleports to Vegeta who has been granted a one-day pass back to Earth to fight Super Buu by King Yemma and Fortuneteller Baba.
When Goku and Vegeta fuse using the Potara Earrings, Vegito is born. As Vegito is a fusion of both Goke and Vegeta, he shares a lot of the same characters as the two in both appearance and personality. Vegito is the same height and build as Goku and wears the same clothing with the coloring reversed, and of course, the two Potara Earrings. Vegito is easy-going like Goku but exhibits the same cockiness as Vegeta, often taunting opponents during battle.
Vegito's base power is said to be stronger than Super Saiyan 3 Goku and potentially on par with a Super Saiyan 4, advancing so far as to having achieved Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken during the Prison Planet Saga of Dragon Ball Super. Vegito has also appeared in a number of video games including Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Dragon Ball FighterZ, and even fights his Fusion-Dance counterpart Gogeta in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot takes place across the entire storyline of the Dragon Ball Z series, with additional attention applied to the smaller story arcs like the Trunks Saga. However, it doesn't appear that Kakarot will venture outside of Dragon Ball Z, meaning that while Vegito will be playable and take on the form of a Super Saiyan, it's unlikely that Super Saiyan Blue from Dragon Ball Super will appear.
As the game's story expands such a significant length of time including important moments when Goku wasn't a key part in the anime, it only makes sense that additional playable characters would help fill in the gaps. Depending on whether or not the game is in chronological order, Vegito likely won't make an appearance until towards the end of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot where players would take on the character after Goku and Vegeta fuse. What's also unclear is whether or not Vegito's playable sections will take advantage of the confirmed open-world exploration and side-quests.
The lead up to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is already exciting, so the addition of fan-favorite characters like Vegito is great. Vegito has untold levels of potential in both the narrative and gameplay and could introduce an interesting dynamic given how different Goku and Vegeta are - going as far as potentially combining different gameplay styles into one.
