Summary

  • Giant characters with unique abilities and powers have been a long-standing feature in Dragon Ball.
  • Janemba, Baby, Anilaza, Piccolo, and Cell Max are some of the most powerful giant characters in the franchise.
  • Cell Max stands out as the strongest giant, defeating even Orange Piccolo's bluffing giant form with ease.

Dragon Ball is a series that is filled with many whacky and unique character designs. From 7-foot tall green Namekians to Saiyans who are only differentiated from regular humans because of their monkey tails, the series has all sorts of unique designs that make sure no two characters look too similar. This also goes true for the transformations that many characters undergo, which often make them take a gigantic form.

Giant characters are not a recent addition to the Dragon Ball franchise. These have been a part of this series since the early days, as some of Goku's greatest villains, such as Demon King Piccolo, had a giant form that was very powerful. The power scaling of the series has changed since those days, so let's take a look at the most powerful giants in all of Dragon Ball and why they're far stronger than their contemporaries.

Janemba Disrupted Dimensions

A Demonic Powerhouse

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn

Debut Date

March 4, 1995

During the events of the Fusion Reborn film, a machine responsible for the cleansing of souls for reincarnation broke down, fusing all the negative energy into a singular entity, forming Janemba. This character is usually remembered for his demonic super form that fought Super Saiyan 3 Goku and Gogeta, but his original form was that of a monstrously powerful and massive giant.

Janemba!

Giant Janemba was very childish in its demeanor, always laughing and causing destruction merely because he thought it was fun. He had dimension and reality-warping abilities, as he was shown to fight against Goku by making his attack travel through portals and by turning normal objects into many smaller versions of himself. Janemba's powers were unique and powerful enough to threaten the destruction of hell itself, forcing Goku to use his Super Saiyan 3 form to defeat this form of the villain.

Great Ape Baby Threatened Earth

The Will of the Tuffles Lived On Through Him

First Appearance

Dragon Ball GT, Episode 22, "The Baby Secret"

Debut Date

August 21, 1996

Baby was introduced in Dragon Ball GT and, although the series itself wasn't canon, it introduced many great ideas that fans love to this day. One of these was Baby, who many considered to be the greatest villain in all of GT, who took over the body of Vegeta and proceeded to infect many of the Z-Fighters so he could turn Earth into another planet for the Tuffles and eradicate the Saiyans.

Spare my the mystic mumbo jumbo. The mightiest will triumph!

Toward the end of his arc, he transformed into the Great Ape form, which is the signature ability of the Saiyan race. However, unlike the ones from before, Great Ape Baby was golden and had accents of the Tuffle race, and was so powerful that it could only have been defeated by Super Saiyan 4 Goku. Even more, his most powerful move was strong enough to destroy the entire planet.

Anilaza Was A Powerful Enemy

The Last Resort of Universe 3

anilaza-dbs
Anilaza from Dragon Ball Super

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Super, Episode 121, "All-Out War! The Ultimate Four-Fold Union vs. The 7th Universe's Total Offensive!"

Debut Date

December 24, 2017

The Tournament of Power was a contest between the multiverse's mightiest warriors who had to defeat one another to ensure the survival of their home universe. However, some universes fared far better than others and the weaker ones often had to resort to tricks or sudden power-ups to keep pace with the stronger fighters. One of these was Anilaza, who was the result of a fusion of 4 characters from Universe 3.

Now unleash your wrath, Anilaza. You are the mightiest of all warriors!

Anilaza was massive, perhaps the largest character in the history of Dragon Ball. Using this size to his advantage, he caused an incredible amount of destruction, proving to even be a match for the combined forces of Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and both Universe 7 Androids and even engaged in a beam struggle with all of them at once. Anilaza was so strong that he was even winning this struggle until 17 found his weakness.

Orange Piccolo Had A Giant Form

An Incredibly Powerful Namekian Form

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

Debut Date

June 11, 2022

The Super Hero film finally brought Piccolo and Gohan to a relative level of strength to Goku and Vegeta, with the former unlocking his extremely strong Orange Piccolo form. This form made him far stronger than he had ever been before, making the power of both Gamma Androids pale in comparison to his own. Eventually, Piccolo became a giant to fight against Cell Max.

I turned orange? Really? I didn't even notice.

However, despite this incredible transformation being far stronger than anything ever seen before, Orange Piccolo's giant form was more or less a bluff. This is because it didn't increase his inherent power all that much, just adding a boost to his physical power due to his giant stature. Still, though, Orange Piccolo was stronger than most characters who came before him.

Cell Max Was The Strongest Giant

The Most Powerful Version of Cell

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

Debut Date

June 11, 2022

Despite the strength of Orange Piccolo, however, the strongest giant in the entire Dragon Ball franchise is without a doubt Cell Max, who made his debut in the same film as well. Created by the Red Ribbon Army as the ultimate Android to be used against the Z-Fighters, Cell Max reached a level comparable to the strongest villains ever seen before in the story, such as Jiren.

Even after Piccolo got his insane power-up and unlocked his giant form on top of that, he was still defeated by Cell Max with not much effort. In fact, Cell damaged him so much that Piccolo seemingly died, allowing Gohan to reach into the depths of his potential to unlock his Beast transformation, which was able to kill Cell Max for good. However, it just goes to show that without someone on the level of Ultra Instinct or Ultra Ego, Cell Max is impossible to defeat.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
