Beast is an insanely powerful transformation introduced in Dragon Ball Super, a movie that mostly focuses on Gohan and Piccolo, characters who didn't get as much spotlight as they could in the TV anime. It could be said that Dragon Ball finally did justice to Gohan by giving him the Beast form.
But could he unlock an even more powerful form than this? Or is Beast the ceiling to Gohan's potential as a character? The answer might not be as obvious as some would expect.

How Gohan Awakens Beast in Dragon Ball Super
Beast is a transformation introduced in the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and later featured in the Dragon Ball Super manga and thus considered a canon transformation by many fans, since Toriyama was directly involved in Dragon Ball Super prior to his tragic death in 2024.
Gohan awakens this form when fighting against Cell Max. In fact, he was furious after believing that Cell had killed Piccolo, so he accidentally unleashed Beast; he actually hadn't even been training much before unleashing this transformation. In "Beast Mode," Gohan's appearance is similar to his Super Saiyan 2 form, except that his hair turns white or platinum, his eyes become red, and his eyebrows are gone (similar to SSJ3 forms). This form is also called "Final Gohan" (Saigo Gohan), since that was the name originally written in initial drafts. The name was likely changed because Final Gohan would be easily confused with Ultimate Gohan, a transformation introduced in the Buu Saga. Nonetheless, these transformations are related, as Beast could be considered an evolved form of Ultimate.
How Powerful Is Gohan in His Beast Form?
Gohan Beast is the most powerful form that he has ever unlocked in the series, as of now. It is also a transformation that is exclusive to Gohan in the manga (other characters might have Beast forms in video games), since it is related to his unique potential, suggesting his daughter Pan might eventually unlock Beast as well.

Beast is on par with Goku's Mastered Ultra Instinct form. It is said that Gohan could even become a God of Destruction with this form, but he lacks the right personality for it. True to its name, Gohan initially didn't have much control over this form; he just unleashed the Beast inside him. But he was able to improve his control after training with Piccolo. In short, Beast is one of the most powerful transformations featured in Dragon Ball Super.
Can Gohan Unlock An Even More Powerful Form?
Since it's Dragon Ball we're talking about, it's always possible that a character, especially a Saiyan, can unlock a transformation more powerful than any before. However, Gohan and the other Saiyans have reached such an amazing level of power that the story would probably benefit more from finding other ways to make them become more powerful instead of introducing more transformations. For instance, it would be better to create new fusions, especially after the introduction of Join Bugs in Dragon Ball Daima, instead of creating new forms.
That said, Gohan usually unleashes his true powers when he is angry and when the people he loves are in real danger. This gives Gohan the determination to break all boundaries and defeat his enemies. Considering that, it's possible that Gohan would unlock an even more powerful form if provoked enough.
When Will Dragon Ball Super Return?
Dragon Ball Super went on hiatus in March 2024 after the announcement of Toriyama's death. In February 2025, Chapter 104 was released as a bonus story to the Super Hero Saga, which concluded with Chapter 103. Unfortunately, there's no news on when the series will return. However, in an interview, Toyotaro teased that the long-awaited Black Frieza Arc is on the way.
Black Frieza was introduced in the Granolah Arc. He is more powerful than any of the Z Fighters, including Beast Gohan, which is why fans believe that new transformations will be introduced in the battle against Black Frieza.
