Of all the Saiyan characters in Dragon Ball, none are stronger than Vegito and Gogeta, who are the fusions born from the union of Goku and Vegeta through the Potara Earrings and Fusion Dance respectively. Not only do these fusions merge the strengths of these incredible Saiyan warriors, but they also add a further boost that multiplies the resulting power level even further, creating mortals who many believe are even stronger than Beerus.

Both of these legendary warriors have been a part of the Dragon Ball franchise for decades, so, naturally, the debate of who is stronger between them has been raging for years. With Gogeta's first canon appearance in the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie, it seems that this old question may have finally been answered. So, let's go over why Gogeta may just be the superior fusion out of the two.

Out of all the techniques available in the Dragon Ball franchise, fusion has got to be the easiest method of gaining a ton of power with very little effort. Essentially, the essence of two warriors merge in order to form a single fighter who is far stronger than either of their constituents, and the best examples of this are Vegito and Gogeta, who are both formed from the fusion of Goku and Vegeta through different methods.

At the current stage, there are three main ways for Saiyans to fuse; the Potara Earrings, the Fusion Dance, and the fusion Medi Bugs from Daima, though only the mergers from the former two methods have been seen. As is to be expected, fans have been debating about the efficacy of each fusion and debating about who the strongest one of them all is for years, and for the longest time, the answer to this was Vegito. Within the context of what we knew of the story, this made perfect sense as well.

When the Fusion Dance was first shown in the series, it was through Gotenks, where it was explained that this type of fusion can only take place if the constituents are at the same level of power. What this means is that if either one is stronger, they have to lower their power to the weaker one's level so that they can fuse. When Gogeta was first shown in the Fusion Reborn film, fans assumed the same thing, since Goku had unlocked Super Saiyan 3 and, assumingly, had to bring his power down to Vegeta's level for them to fuse.

Pair this with Vegito, who was, at the time before Gogeta's canon appearance, the strongest Saiyan ever. Not only was the Potara Fusion much easier to perform than the overly complicated Fusion Dance, but the strength of the resulting fusion added the max power of both constituents and further multiplied it due to something called a 'rival boost'. This is essentially an extra power-up which only comes if the people fusing are rivals.

Our two strengths aren't just added together, they're significantly magnified!

However, Dragon Ball Super changed all of this. The aspect of bringing one's power down to the weaker one's level seems to have been abandoned since Goku never did so in the Broly movie, though it could be argued that he and Vegeta were equally strong at that stage. Moreover, in Gogeta's short conversation with Frieza, he stated that the strengths of Goku and Vegeta are added together and then magnified on top of that, implying that there is something very similar to a rival boost in this new retconned version of the Fusion Dance.

The real reason why it is superior to the Potara Fusion method is because of its stability. Each time Vegito has been called forth, he has defused before the natural timer for the Potara Earrings wears off because of his incredible power output. However, this doesn't seem to be a problem for Gogeta, as he was able to take on Broly in his Super Saiyan Blue form for quite a while and never defused. This was a problem for Gotenks back in Z, since he couldn't stay in his Super Saiyan 3 state for more than 5 minutes, but it seems that this has been fixed, making the Fusion Dance the quintessential fusion method in Dragon Ball.

A Summarized Case For Vegito Being The Better Fusion For The Series

Another Possibility

  • Some still argue that Vegito and the Potara method are better.

On the other hand, some fans still think that Vegito is the stronger fusion and the Potara Earrings are the better fusion method. For the former point, there's no debate that Vegito and Gogeta are equal in terms of strength, since they take the power of both of their constituents and multiply them on top of that. They are essentially the same person, with the only true difference being which personality is dominant in their bodies, with Vegito being more like Vegeta and Gogeta being more similar to Goku.

However, a case can be made that the Potara method is the better fusion method. The reason for this is that the Fusion Dance has to be picture-perfect to work properly, which is hard to do since the dance itself is hard to remember but incredibly easy to mess up. Even one small misstep can lead to a failed fusion which will stay for 30 minutes no matter what, which means that it is not at all efficient in a dire situation. However, for the Potara Earrings, the users just have to place them on opposite ears to fuse, making this the better way of fusing.
