Dragon Ball Super went on hiatus in March 2024, following the announcement of Akira Toriyama's death. The series has been on hiatus ever since, with a brief return in February 2025. With no news over time, fans have started to wonder if the series has been canceled.

Dragon Ball Super is one of the flagship titles of Shueisha's V-JUMP magazine (alongside Boruto: Two Blue Vortex). Additionally, it is an official and canon sequel to the original manga, written by Toyotaro under Toriyama's supervision. The future of the franchise seems unclear since the author's death, but what could be behind the "silence" about Dragon Ball Super?

Will The Dragon Ball Super Manga Ever Return?

When a special Dragon Ball Super one-shot was announced, fans hoped that the series would soon return to its regular schedule. Their anticipation grew once the one-shot was published in February 2025 and confirmed as Dragon Ball Super Chapter 204. Although no chapter was scheduled for March, fans were confident that good news would come in no time.

However, as the months went by with no indication of the series' return, things started to change. Special dates such as Goku Day (May 9) and the 10th anniversary of Dragon Ball Super were full of anticipation, yet V-JUMP still hasn't announced a release date for DBS Chapter 205 — the anniversary is this month, so there could be last-minute surprises. However, no chapter is scheduled to be out with the celebrations in the magazine. This has not only disappointed fans, but also led them to question whether the series has been canceled.

Although V-JUMP hasn't announced the series' resumption, the magazine hasn't officially canceled it. Furthermore, they recently published an interview with Toyotaro in which he hinted at potential upcoming events, and the magazine continues to promote the series as part of its ongoing titles. All of this suggests that there are still plans to resume Dragon Ball Super in the future.

When Could DB Super Be Back?

Since we don't know why the series hasn't returned yet, it's hard to predict when it will. It may be related to Toyotaro potentially having trouble continuing the story without Toriyama, or it may be related to other issues, including the alleged legal battle over the rights to the Dragon Ball franchise.

It seems that there is something preventing the series from returning for now. If they were just waiting for the "right timing," the series would probably return this month. However, since no announcement has been made, it seems that something else is going on. This doesn't mean that something majo r is preventing the series from returning. It just means that Toyotaro and/or Shueisha haven't been able to align their plans to continue the series for whatever reason. For this reason, fans shouldn't wait for a specific date; the series could return at any time.

Fans Want the Black Frieza Arc

The series went on hiatus after concluding the Super Hero Saga, and it has been confirmed that the manga will begin a new arc. While there are many possibilities, fans are hoping that Dragon Ball Super will return with the highly anticipated Black Frieza Arc. Black Frieza was introduced in the Granolah Arc, and fans have wanted more of him ever since. This is by far the most powerful form that Frieza has ever achieved, and he was confirmed to be stronger than any of the Z-Fighters in this form.

I couldn't very well keep losing to you Saiyans my whole life, so I needed a bit of a power-up. Meet Black Frieza. Achieving this form took plenty of toil, I'll have you know.

There is also speculation that the Black Frieza arc will be the final one in the story. This would make sense, given that Frieza is such a popular villain. Creating new villains wouldn't generate the same hype, and bringing back more villains would seem too repetitive. Therefore, it seems fitting that the series should conclude with Frieza. Toyotaro has actually hinted that a Black Frieza arc is coming, though he hasn't confirmed that it will be the last one. What fans can be sure of is that the Black Frieza arc will make history in the franchise.
