Summary

  • Nakatsuru believes a DBZ remake will happen, sparking hope among fans for a new format.
  • A complete Dragon Ball and DBZ remake could attract new fans and revitalize the franchise.
  • Litigation over franchise rights may delay a remake, pushing for new stories instead.

A staff member of Dragon Ball Daima recently stated that he thinks that a Dragon Ball Z remake is inevitable and will happen one day. DBZ is one of the most popular parts of the original story, and surely many fans would like to see it in a new format (although some would rather not).

The news soon sparked a lot of discussion among the fans, and made some hopeful that a remake might be coming in the near future, especially since it would allow re-enjoying the series at a better pace. But is it already time for Dragon Ball Z to be remade?

Dragon Ball Daima Designer Would Love To Work On It

Nakatsuru Thinks A Remake Will Happen

First of all, it is important to establish the context of the original statement. In a recent interview, Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, the character designer of Dragon Ball Daima, said that he thinks that a remake will happen one day, after being asked about DBZ.

In any case, the original work exists... And from there, there are multiple ways to create a new series. Since I think it will happen one day...

He also commented that he would love to work on it, but added that his involvement is not the most important thing about it.

Nakatsuru also said that he wishes that the franchise would one day "go beyond Toriyama's imagination," which may or may not be linked with Dragon Ball Super, the official sequel to the story that, probably, only Toyotaro will be writing now (when it comes back from hiatus, that is).

It is important to note that Nakatsuru did not confirm that a remake is in production or even being planned, but he seems certain that it will eventually happen. Of course, this news was mostly welcomed by many fans, although some would rather see new stories for the franchise.

Also, some might wonder if Dragon Ball Z Kai isn't already a DBZ remake, but Kai is a re-cut with improved visuals (basically, a filler-free remaster). A remake would mean re-drawing the series, and probably offering something more similar to Daima's graphics, employing newer technologies.

Is It Time For A Dragon Ball Z Remake?

Despite the seemingly good news, "eventually" is a vague concept. It seems likely that Dragon Ball Z will be remade someday, but "someday" could be quite far from today. But would it be a good time to remake the series now, if there are any plans?

Honestly , this is probably the perfect time not only for a DBZ remake, but for a complete remake of the series, from Chapter 1 to Chapter 519 — that is, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z remade into a single anime. Story-wise, it would even make more sense to do it this way. But it would be a long series, even without the fillers, so maybe dividing it into seasons instead of airing it all at once would be a better approach. Also, at this point, a remake would probably also retcon a few events in the series.

Dragon Ball Daima proved not only that the series is still strong, but also that there are a lot of fans who still enjoy the adventurous vibes of the classic Dragon Ball anime. While DBZ may be more popular due to the intense action, there is a lot of room for a full "Dragon Ball revival" or even a "classic Dragon Ball revival."

Making Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z easily accessible to new audiences on many different streaming services is a way to bring younger people into the series, but redoing everything from scratch would have even more potential to attract new fans to the original story — if it is done well, of course.

The Potential Challenges of Remaking Dragon Ball

A Dragon Ball or a Dragon Ball Z remake might not be that simple, though — at least, not right now. As far as we know, the rights to the franchise are in dispute between Tokyo Capsule Corporation (led by Akio Iyuko) and Shueisha. This means that probably any Dragon Ball project, especially a manga-related project, would step into the line of fire of this litigation.

For this reason, it may be a better idea to look to the future and create new stories for the franchise instead of trying to revive the manga once again.

Dragon Ball Z is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll, subbed and dubbed in English and other languages.
