When the news broke that a Dragon Ball anime was finally going to air for the first time since 2017, fans became giddy at the potential return of Super. However, it was eventually revealed that this was going to be a new anime altogether, named Dragon Ball Daima, which was canon but set before Beerus and Whis made their existence known to the Z-Fighters. Most were skeptical about its release and reception.

Despite this, Daima proved to be a great show that introduced a lot of positives to the franchise as a whole and opened up the lore of the series a lot. However, as well-received as it was, there were some glaring problems that Daima had which were not only to be expected from a Dragon Ball property, but there were also those that were unique to this new series. So, let's break down what these are.

Ultra Ego was introduced as the perfect parallel technique to Ultra Instinct, and aside from Vegeta, fans think these characters could also use it!

Many Felt That Daima Was Just A Really Long Filler Arc Of The Series

An Inconsequential Story

Series Start

Dragon Ball Daima, Episode 1, "Conspiracy"

Debut Date

October 11, 2024

The story of Dragon Ball Daima was quite an interesting one, as it showed the heroes venturing into the previously unseen Demon Realm in order to reverse the effects of what happened to them. In doing so, the lore of the franchise as a whole was greatly expanded, which was something that fans unanimously loved about this series. However, a big complaint among them was the fact that the show felt like a drawn-out filler arc.

The Demon King fears no mortal!

The biggest reason why this was felt is because the story is set almost directly after the Buu Saga and before Beerus even makes his entrance into the series. The events of Daima are never mentioned again for obvious reasons, but the fact that this is the route that was chosen makes the overall journey feel more like a fun side story than a substantial story arc with massive implications for the future.

There Were A Lot Of Retcons In The Story, Despite Awesome Moments

Nothing Big Came Of These Moments

  • There were a lot of retcons.

Perhaps the biggest flaw of Daima was the fact that there were many retcons that changed a lot of what was previously believed about the world. In Super, the origins of the multiverse have always remained a mystery, but it was shown that there are 12 universes in total that make it up and that the one to rule over all of them is Grand Zeno, the most powerful character in the entire franchise.

All of existence... Go away!

However, Daima showed that the Demon Realm existed even before the multiverse did, and that one of the kings of this realm eventually created Majin Rymus, who then went on to create the multiverse. On top of this, it was implied that there are innumerable universes, which just flies in the face of what everyone was led to believe in Super. Although the lore reveals were great, they contradicted and retconned what was previously acknowledged.

Things Were Introduced That Were Never Mentioned Again

Especially Transformations

  • New transformations in this series were never mentioned again.

Of course, due to it being released after Super, Daima had to introduce many new aspects within it that would engage the viewers, and the new transformations of Goku and Vegeta did this many times over. However, as great as it was to see Vegeta finally unlock Super Saiyan 3 and the official canonicity of Super Saiyan 4, it didn't make sense for the grander story of the franchise as a whole.

Now... To go even further beyond. Get a load of this!

This is because by the end of Daima, these transformations were the strongest ones that Goku and Vegeta had in their arsenals, so they should have at least been mentioned in Super, even if briefly. Of course, they couldn't have been since the writers didn't think about it at that stage, but it does bring down the overall storytelling and world-building of Dragon Ball as a whole because of it.

Vegeta Got Snubbed Again, Which Fans Are Just Tired Of Seeing

The Best Character Gets The Worst Treatment

  • Vegeta got excluded from some of the biggest moments, again.

One of the most unfortunate and frustrating things about Toriyama's writing of Dragon Ball as a whole has to be the way he has always treated Vegeta. He has been on record as stating that he dislikes the Saiyan Prince, which is strange to hear since Vegeta is considered to be the best-written character in the series, due to why he is generally the favorite character of most fans.

I'm stepping aside, you two can take it from here.

In Daima, Vegeta seemed to be getting a much better role at the start, since he finally unlocked Super Saiyan 3 and was the focus of many episodes, which made everyone happy. However, towards the end of the series, he started to get sidelined again, only refusing to partake in the fight against the main villain due to a dumb gag that goes against the kind of character that he is.

People Tend To Dislike That Everyone Was Turned Into A Child

A Tired Trope

  • Something that most fans disliked.

Funnily enough, one of the leading factors behind the Daima series as a whole was one that most disagreed with, which was that all the main characters were turned into children. Surprisingly, the way that this was handled was actually pretty good, since it served as a smart way to depower the heroes, but the very act of doing so was what fans were generally against.

The main point here is the fact that this is a trope that has been used before in the series, but not always in a positive way. The last time something like this happened was in Dragon Ball GT, which was universally criticized for it. Many felt that turning everyone into a child in Daima was done in order to bank on nostalgia and to gain a new fan base of children, so some say that it was a bad decision for the series overall.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
