Summary

  • New Dragon Ball Daima Blu-ray features never-before-seen artwork by Akira Toriyama.
  • Dragon Ball Daima's canonicity divides fans due to inconsistencies with Dragon Ball Super.
  • Daima's release hints at a possible expanded Dragon Ball multiverse for fans to enjoy.

New Dragon Ball artwork by creator Akira Toriyama will be released in Dragon Ball Daima Blu-ray Deluxe Limited Edition. It's been over a year since the passing of Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball and many other iconic series, and his last work, Dragon Ball Daima, aired from October 2024 to February 2025.

Dragon Ball Daima divided fans: while some enjoyed that this story brings back the adventure vibes from the first Dragon Ball anime (and the first part of the original manga), others wanted it to be more like Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. Furthermore, DB Daima also brought back a few concepts introduced in Dragon Ball GT, a series that many fans dislike and don't consider canon.

Dragon Ball Daima Producer Reveals Akira Toriyama's Involvement in the Series

Akio Iyuko shared new information regarding the creation of Dragon Ball Daima, and the involvement of Toriyama in it!

Akira Toriyama's Never-Before-Seen Dragon Ball Artwork

It has been announced tha t the Japanese Deluxe Blu-ray Edition of Dragon Ball Daima will include a special booklet with never-before-seen artwork by Akira Toriyama. While the announcement doesn't mention what kind of artwork will be featured, it will likely include concept art and character designs — perhaps there will be a few more surprises.

The special box will feature a cover illustration by designer Katsushou Nakatsuru and include episodes in 4K Ultra HD quality in addition to the 4 BD discs in standard quality. Additional bonus content includes stickers, pins, and interviews with the main staff. This limited Blu-ray will be released in Japan on July 2, 2025, and it costs ¥40,800 (about $282).

Is Dragon Ball Daima Canon?

Dragon Ball Daima is generally considered canon since Akira Toriyama was said to be deeply involved in its production. According to producer Akio Iyuko, he wrote most of the story, even though he would originally just serve as a consultant. Daima is supposed to take place between the end of the Majin Buu Saga and Dragon Ball Super. However, there are minor inconsistencies between Daima and Super, which made some fans feel that it makes more sense for the series to take place in an alternate timeline — which would mean that the Dragon Ball multiverse is canon.

He had a strong sense of the Dragon Ball world, and he would change his focus depending on the work, but he wouldn't force anything into the setting. The plot is also important, and since there is no original manga for this anime, we were aware that we had to "pull" it out like a manga.

— Akio Iyuko

In fact, Akio Iyuko seems to have hinted at this possibility in one interview. If Daima and Super are canonically set in different universes, this means that Dragon Ball GT, movies, and even fillers could also be canon. However, for now, the official information is that the original manga, Daima, and Super take place in the same timeline. Maybe it is time for Dragon Ball fans to leave debates over canonicity behind and simply enjoy the numerous Dragon Ball content as they are.

Dragon Ball Daima is available on Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu in the US. Crunchyroll recently added an English-dubbed version of the series.
