Like other games in the Dragon Age franchise, Dragon Age: The Veilguard gives you access to more party members than you can keep with you at any one time. As such, you'll need to choose who to bring with you during any given quest.
However, Dragon Age: The Veilguard doesn't let you swap out your companions whenever you want. Instead, you'll need to choose your followers carefully when you begin a quest, or look for one of the fast-travel beacons that appear throughout most regions.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Features an Easter Egg of a Popular Mass Effect Meme
During the early moments of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, players discover a subtle nod to a popular meme originally from Mass Effect 2.
How to Change Companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Starting a New Quest
Your first chance to choose your party members comes when you exit the Lighthouse. Once you select your destination, you can find the "Change Party" option just above the "Start Quest" button, along with the two party members you've currently selected. Note that Dragon Age: The Veilguard only lets you choose two party members at a time.
Something else to keep in mind is that you can't choose your party members for the first three or four quests of Veilguard. Even after you meet your third party member, circumstances will decide which two will come with you. Your first chance to actually choose your companions comes when you begin the story quest "Into the Crossroads."
Beacons
When you're on a quest or simply exploring a major area, you'll come across fast-travel spots called beacons. If you fall in battle, your party will respawn at the nearest beacon. You can instantly travel across the area when you select them from the map. Beacons are also where you can change your party composition.
This last feature isn't as obvious as the first two, mostly because you'll discover beacons before you get the ability to swap your party members. However, if you ever walk up to a beacon (after you start the quest "Into the Crossroads"), you'll see the text "Gather Your Party" appear. "Gather Your Party" is something of a running joke in Bioware games, but in this context, pressing the indicated button or key will bring you to the party selection screen.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard - What is Advantage?
Here's what players should know about advantage in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Party Selection Tips
- Detonations are useful ways of dealing exceptional amounts of damage. Make sure your party can both apply and detonate the same status effects.
- Remember that Rook, no matter what class or build you choose, can also apply and detonate status effects. A party member who compliments Rook will be useful no matter who else you bring.
- Rook can use the Lyrium Dagger to duplicate the special out-of-combat abilities certain party members have. This means you don't have to bother swapping your companions to deal with obstacles or bonuses.
- On the other hand, party members who are present will react to your decisions, while those who are absent will only react to your most important choices. If a companion's loyalty is low, you should bring them on more quests, especially when those quests benefit the faction they belong to.
