Summary
- Neve & Harding form a strong duo for tutorials and ranged attacks in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
- Davrin & Lucanis are ideal for upfront combat as a warrior Rook, with fiery and necrotic attacks.
- Bellara & Lucanis, along with Taash & Emmrich, make excellent pairs for balanced combos in battles.
In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, players can only pick two companions to accompany Rook on their travels, unlike the other Dragon Age games where players could have three companions in their party at once. This makes it more important than ever before to pick the right teammates, but it also means that players will have to think about which of their companions works best with one another.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard - 8 Best Returning Characters, Ranked
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is full of familiar faces that fans will be happy to see again; here are the best returning characters in the game.
With this in mind, it's worth looking at a few particularly noteworthy choices when it comes to companion duos in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. These pairings work well in terms of abilities, but also when it comes to their primer and detonator skills.
1 Neve & Harding
Girl Power
- Neve’s abilities apply Weakened and detonate Sundered
- Harding abilities apply Sundered and detonate Overwhelmed
- Neve damage type: Cold
- Harding damage type: Physical
Harding and Neve are an excellent team that the player will experience early on in the game, as they are the only two companions for the first section of gameplay. They act as a tutorial on how primer and detonator skills work, but their abilities meld pretty well in general too.
Neve’s ice powers complement Harding's long-range arrow shots excellently as well, though neither of them is quite as effective in combat when things get up close and personal. For players with a warrior Rook, they make for a great pair to watch one's back and attack from a distance.
2 Davrin & Lucanis
Frenemies
- Davrin’s abilities apply Overwhelm and detonate Weakened
- Lucanis’s abilities apply Sundered and detonate Overwhelmed
- Davrin damage type: Fire
- Lucanis damage type: Necrotic
While Neve and Harding are well suited for a warrior Rook teammate, the Davrin and Lucanis team composition works better for a mage Rook, as they are both fighters that engage in upfront physical combat.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard - 8 Items You Should Sell To Merchants
For those looking to make a nice profit in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, here are some of the best items to sell to merchants.
Lucanis uses his daggers for necrotic attacks, while Davrin is a stereotypical sword and shield warrior. That being said, Davrin also has griffon baby Assan as a sidekick who will swoop in for fiery attacks when commanded. Lucanis can detonate Overwhelmed enemies when Davrin applies the Overwhelm primer skill as well, which can make for some great combos between the two.
3 Bellara & Lucanis
Sweet n’ Dangerous
- Bellara’s abilities apply Weakened and detonate Sundered
- Lucanis’s abilities apply Sundered and detonate Overwhelmed
- Bellara damage type: Electricity
- Lucanis damage type: Necrotic
Lucanis works well with several other companions, including elven mage Bellara. Lucanis can apply the Sundered primer and Bellara can detonate it with her skills, but the two also work well thanks to their combination of ranged and melee attacks.
Bellara utilizes electric-based magic from a distance. Her Galvanized Tear ability is particularly handy when it comes to gathering enemies together in one place. When Bellara uses this skill to force enemies into one place, Lucanis can cut them down with ease and inflict necrotic damage too.
4 Lucanis & Emmrich
Necro Bros
- Lucanis’s abilities apply Sundered and detonate Overwhelmed
- Emmrich’s abilities apply Weakened and detonate Sundered
- Lucanis damage type: Necrotic
- Emmrich damage type: Necrotic
The last Lucanis companion team up on this list is Lucanis alongside fellow necrotic damage type character, Emmrich. It might seem like a bit of a tricky team-up to manage - seeing as it goes all in with the necrotic damage type - but it can be highly effective, particularly for certain quests.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Why You Should Romance Lucanis
As man that is quite literally haunted by his demons, Lucanis will make for an intense and potentially tragic romance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
As well as offering up plenty of necrotic damage, Emmrich can also detonate enemies that Lucanis applies Sundered to. If players want to up the ante with this combo, make sure to upgrade Lucanis’s skill tree to ensure that his abilities apply as much necrotic damage as possible.
5 Emmrich & Taash
The Odd Couple
- Emmrich’s abilities apply Weakened and detonate Sundered
- Taash’s abilities apply Overwhelm and detonate Weakened
- Emmrich damage type: Necrotic
- Taash damage type: Fire
They might seem like odd bedfellows, but Taash and Emmrich can become the ultimate powerhouse duo when they come together on the battlefield. Taash is a bold and brash fire starter while Emmrich is a sophisticated necromancer. They shouldn’t work together, but they do incredibly well.
Not only can Taash detonate enemies that Emmrich has applied Weakened to, but their combination of ranged necrotic magic attacks and melee fire attacks can make for hugely powerful combos that can take down waves of enemies at a time.
6 Bellara and Taash
Sparkle Flames
- Bellara’s abilities apply Weakened and detonate Sundered
- Taash’s abilities apply Overwhelm and detonate Weakened
- Bellara damage type: Electricity
- Taash damage type: Fire
Last but not least are Bellara and Taash, who work excellently well on any battlefield in the game. Weakened enemies that Bellara attacks can be detonated by Taash, but - much like with Taash and Emmrich - they also combine ranged and melee abilities to cover all bases. Bellara also brings her soothing Replenish skill to a fight, so there is always someone around to provide healing.
This duo works particularly well with a rogue Rook, as there will then be one mage, one warrior, and one rogue, making for an even and well-balanced team. The two of them are also well-matched as Taash is effective against Armor when she uses her Spitfire skill, whereas Bellara’s magic works wonders against Shields. Together, Bellara and Taash can easily become an unstoppable force.
