Recent reports have indicated that Dragon Age: The Veilguard reached around 1.5 million players, failing to meet EA’s expectations by around 50%. Dragon Age: The Veilguard had a very divisive reception ever since its first official trailer was unveiled, and it seems that this made the game fail to achieve financial success.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard was released on October 31 after around nine years of development, and it quickly became one of the most controversial games of 2024. While Dragon Age: The Veilguard received mostly positive reviews from critics, obtaining an average score of 79 on OpenCritic, fans had pretty divisive opinions about it. At the moment, the game has Mostly Positive reviews on Steam, with 70% of the players liking it. However, the good but not stellar reception combined with several controversies surrounding the entry may have hurt its sales.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Concept Art Reveals Early Plans for Solas
A former Dragon Age concept artist shares early images of Solas, showing how The Veilguard could have been a very different game.
In a new report made by Bloomberg, it was revealed that EA’s two major holiday games, Dragon Age: The Veilguard and EA Sports FC 2025, have underperformed EA’s expectations. In Dragon Age’s case, it was noted that the title only reached around 1.5 million players during the quarter, low numbers that failed to match EA’s expectations by around 50%, suggesting that the publisher expected the RPG to sell at least 3 million units.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Failed to Meet EA's Expectations By Nearly 50%

Before these reports, it was already known that Veilguard was struggling. Not only did Dragon Age: The Veilguard's initial sales fall short of Inquisition’s, but the game did not have any post-launch DLC, a decision likely influenced by low sales at release.
Last week, Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s director Corinne Busche left BioWare after working for over 18 years at EA. Despite the timing of her departure, the director explained that she left due to receiving an excellent offer that she could not refuse, not due to the game’s poor sales or critical reception.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s lower than expected sales will certainly put additional pressure on BioWare, as the company has been struggling for several years to create a big hit again. BioWare is currently working on the next Mass Effect, which does not have an official release date yet, and it’s unknown how the failure to reach EA’s financial expectations will affect development. It’s possible that the studio may suffer from more layoffs in the future when considering the current economic conditions in the gaming industry, but only time will tell what will happen.
