Dragon Age: The Veilguard is launching on October 31, 2024, for the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. For better or worse, the latest Dragon Age title represents the culmination of a troubled era for BioWare. Dragon Age: The Veilguard walks in the shadow of a controversial legacy left behind by Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, which may redeem BioWare's image and release a long-awaited sequel to 2014's Game of the Year.

The next chapter of Thedas takes the player to the Tevinter Imperium and beyond, as a confrontation with Solas in Arlathan Forest sets his bitter rivals loose upon the world. Much like the first Dragon Age, the main character in The Veilguard will have six origins for the player to pick from. Though the prologue will take place in the city of Minrathous, the choice of background will play a substantial role in how Rook will interact with the major factions in Northern Thedas.

The October 31 release date for Dragon Age: The Veilguard was revealed at the end of a brief marketing video that used footage from the deep dive of its opening in Minrathous. That being said, fans can expect to see a new trailer for Dragon Age: The Veilguard on August 15, 2024, at 9:00 AM PT. The trailer will be followed up with a new gameplay video on August 19, 2024, while the companions will have a dedicated marketing week starting from August 26, 2024.

What Is Dragon Age: The Veilguard's Release Date?

  • October 31, 2024

Unlike its predecessors, The Veilguard is pivoting towards action-based combat, a bold decision that has split the Dragon Age community in half. It's no secret that Origins is beloved for its tactical gameplay, and many fans are afraid that The Veilguard is abandoning the franchise's roots. However, while the combat loop is closer to the Mass Effect sequels than Dragon Age, BioWare has assured players that the tactical aspects and character progression will remain suitably complex.

The three iconic classes of the Dragon Age franchise will all return in The Veilguard, and Rook will be able to choose from a grand total of nine unique specializations – some unique to Northern Thedas and others familiar to fans of the setting. These specializations will be unlocked by engaging with the six primary factions of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, though Rook's choice of background will affect the initial choices available to them. All seven companions will have a romance path, and The Veilguard will feature Minrathous, a sprawling capital city for players to explore.

On paper, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has a lot of exciting things going for it. In practice, players will find out firsthand if The Veilguard was worth the decade-long wait on October 31, 2024.
