BioWare’s latest action RPG was released in 2024 after being in development for almost a decade. Dragon Age: The Veilguard quickly became one of the most controversial games of the year, as part of the fanbase embraced it, while others were unhappy with the changes made to the franchise and its lore. Despite generally earning positive critical reviews, Dragon Age: The Veilguard underperformed commercially, reaching around 1.5 million players during its first quarter and failing to meet EA’s expectations by around 50%.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard won big at the Gayming Awards 2025 (spotted by Gamesindustry.biz), a competition focused on games with LGBTQ+ themes. Apart from taking the main award home, Veilguard’s protagonist Rook also snagged the Best LGBTQ+ Character Award, and actor Erika Ishii, who voiced one version of Rook, won the Best LGBTQ+ Voice Actor of the Year Award.

While Dragon Age: The Veilguard was nominated for multiple awards, it only won Outstanding Video Game at the 36th GLAAD Media Awards previously. Additionally, the Dragon Age: Vows & Vengeance podcast won Best Audio/Podcast at the Tribeca Festival.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard winning awards in an LGBTQ+-focused competition makes sense, as the game allows gamers to decide Rook’s sexual orientation and gender identity, and features non-binary characters such as Taash. Unfortunately, backlash regarding LGBTQ+ themes was part of the reason why some individuals promoted a review bombing campaign against Dragon Age: The Veilguard after the game released. Among the negative reviews at the time, many bashed the game’s “woke” dialogue and LGBTQ+ representation.
While seeing Dragon Age: The Veilguard winning a GotY award might be heartwarming for some fans, it’s unlikely that the fanbase will see a sequel in the near future. A few months ago, BioWare suffered layoffs, and most of the team who worked on Veilguard have either lost their jobs or were sent to other sectors of EA. Soon before the layoffs, Dragon Age: The Veilguard director, Corinne Busche, left the company, being hired by Skeleton Key Studio to work on an undisclosed game for Wizards of the Coast. At the moment, BioWare seems to be working on the next Mass Effect game, which still does not have an official release date, but is not expected anytime soon.
