Summary

  • Players can choose from six distinct origins for Rook, influencing dialogue and gameplay in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
  • The return of the Inquisitor will likely set the stage for the inevitable confrontation with Solas.
  • Rook can align with one of six factions, regardless of race or class, further personalizing their story.

Not only will players get to pick an origin for their Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but they will be able to choose six distinct options, many of which have been featured in previous games in the franchise. Ahead of the full gameplay reveal for Dragon Age: The Veilguard on June 11, 2024, fans were treated to key information from BioWare about what to expect in the next Dragon Age chapter.

The Veilguard will see the return of the Inquisitor, who will likely have a prominent role during the eventual confrontation with Solas. However, while players will be able to fully customize the Inquisitor's appearance and even select the major decisions that will carry over from Dragon Age: Inquisition, they will also be able to choose a background for Rook out of six possible origins. These origins will likely affect dialogue options, and even how certain moments in Dragon Age: The Veilguard play out.

The seven companions of Dragon Age: The Veilguard all have ties to a different faction that operates in northern Thedas. According to the developers, the same is true for Rook, who will be able to belong to one of six factions – seemingly regardless of their race or class. Rook can be a human, elf, dwarf, or qunari protagonist, and players will be able to further personalize their story by making them a Grey Warden, Antivan Crow, or Shadow Dragon. The information was shared by GravielMN on the main Dragon Age subreddit, where fans were quick to point out that Rook's origins align with the factions of the companions (with the sole exception of Harding).

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Origins for Rook

Shadow Dragons

  • A clandestine group operating out of Tevinter that helps freed slaves escape their former captors. Neve belongs to this faction, which is primarily made up of middle-class Tevinter citizens and former slaves.

Grey Wardens

  • An order of warriors that safeguards Thedas from Darkspawn and the Blight, operating out of Weisshaupt Fortress in the Anderfels. The Dalish elf, Davrin, is a Grey Warden who joins Rook on their mission.

Antivan Crows

  • An elite organization of thieves and assassins whose headquarters is located in Antiva City. It's currently lead by Caterina Dellamorte, the grandmother of Lucanis, one of Rook's companions.

Lords of Fortune

  • The Lords of Fortune are a guild of treasure seekers from Rivain, who engage in perilous adventures in search of riches, even pursuing lucrative monster bounties. The qunari companion, Taash, belongs to this faction.

Mourn Watch

  • The Mourn Watch of Nevarra, a group within the Mortalitasi, are elite guardians of the Grand Necropolis, though they are also known to investigate magical disturbances. Emmrich the Necromancer belongs to the Mourn Watch.

Veil Jumpers

  • An alliance of Dalish elves and outsiders operating in Arlathan who have banded together to deal with a growing threat in Arlathan Forest. Bellara, one of the companions that Rook can befriend, belongs to the Veil Jumpers.

Though some factions, such as the Grey Wardens and the Antivan Crows, are a Dragon Age staple, the setting of northern Thedas allowed BioWare to offer players a fresh experience. Players recently got to see the opening moments of Dragon Age: The Veilguar d in a gameplay deep dive, and the capital city of the Tevinter Imperium is expected to feature as the starting location. Unlike Val Royeaux in Dragon Age: Inquisition, Minrathous is expected to be a more ambitious location that players will be able to fully explore.

The next Dragon Age title is expected to release in Fall 2024, and given the fact that both Origins and Inquisition launched in November, there's a very good chance that The Veilguard will attempt to match one of the franchise's anniversaries. Though the art direction in the reveal trailer has divided the Dragon Age community, there is notable excitement among fans hoping that BioWare may have finally found its groove again with The Veilguard.
