After years of silence, Double Fine may finally have a new game in store for fans, according to a recent rumor. The Tim Schafer-led studio made some of the most unique and beloved titles of the 2000s, including Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. Most recently, Double Fine released Psychonauts 2 to critical acclaim.

After releasing Psychonauts 2, Double Fine said it was exploring new ideas, but since then, the company has released no information about what these projects could be or when fans could expect them. While there's still little official news from the studio, the rumor mill has started to churn, suggesting that its next title will soon see the light of day.

Double Fine Responds to Conker, Banjo-Kazooie Requests

Double Fine is responding to fans requesting new Banjo-Kazooie and Conker games after the studio shares its love for platforming games.

In a Windows Central rundown of the Xbox Games Showcase, Executive Editor Jez Corden said he's "heard some rumblings" that Double Fine is ready to release its next game soon. Where those "rumblings" come from or how reliable they might be is unclear, but Corden seemed to believe that the studio could make an appearance at the upcoming showcase. Previous rumors suggested that Hollow Knight: Silksong will appear at the Xbox Games Showcase, along with other big names like Ninja Gaiden 4, but there hasn't been much mention of a Double Fine game yet. However, since Xbox owns the studio, the June 8 presentation could be the ideal time to reveal its next project.

Double Fine May Reveal Its Next Game at the Xbox Games Showcase

At the start of 2024, Double Fine teased its upcoming plans, which included "tons of fun" for the studio's 25th anniversary, which is in 2025. While the company did heavily discount Psychonauts on Steam for that game's 20th anniversary, that likely wasn't the extent of the "cool stuff" and "shenanigans" Double Fine promised. With the Xbox Games Showcase fast approaching, the time for additional news may be here before long, but the company has remained characteristically quiet, making it difficult to say anything beyond the shadow of a doubt.

While it's uncertain if Double Fine will drop any news during the showcase, if it does, it will likely be a new IP. In previous years, fans have thought they spotted Psychonauts 3 teasers, but these didn't pan out to be anything of the sort, and earlier statements from Schafer made it seem like the studio is prioritizing original content. Fans may finally get a better idea of what that entails soon, but for now, the wait continues.
