As a series, Doom has always been about secrets for players to uncover. From buttons opening secret passages in Doom 1 and Doom 2 to finding passwords for lockers in Doom 3, exploration has always been a rewarding experience. Doom: The Dark Ages continues this trend with all sorts of collectibles for players to find across its 22 chapters.

Often, these collectibles are hidden as secrets for players to discover, and while some secrets are easy to find, others take no small amount of effort to track down. In some cases, you will need to track down a secret key to gain access to some of them. If you are having trouble tracking down the secret key in Chapter 17, here is where you can find it.

Where to Find the Secret Key in Chapter 17

While Chapter 17 isn't particularly long, there are a lot of spaces for items to hide. Don't spend too much time looking for the secret key, though, as it can only be found near the end of the level. You are close to the key when you hear the Witch say, "Prepare the sacrifice". While facing the temple, turn to the left to spot the remains of an old ship. Approach the ship, grab the gold, and head to the door on the shipwreck.

After a few seconds, the door will open, and you will be able to claim the key. A small group of demons spawn when you claim the key, so be ready for that.

Where to Use the Secret Key in Chapter 17

In some levels of Doom: The Dark Ages, the secret key can open multiple doors that would otherwise be inaccessible. However, there is only one door that can be opened with the secret key in Chapter 17. Fortunately, it isn't very far from where you find the key, so you won't have to do much backtracking, if any.

In the same area where you found the key, but before you approach the temple, there is a Sentinel Shrine with a gate that can only be opened by the secret key. Approach the gate to automatically open it, and enter the room. The only thing to find in this chamber is a Ruby, and you don't need to solve any other puzzles, like the wolf statues in previous chapters, to claim it. As mentioned earlier, this is the only secret that is obtained by using the secret key. So once you've claimed everything else in the area, you are free to proceed on to the next chapter.
