Before it was even released in September 2022, everyone heard about Don't Worry Darling, and the movie has a plot twist that many saw coming. Directed by Olivia Wilde, Don't Worry Darling stars Florence Pugh and Harry Styles as married couple Alice and Jack, who live in Victory, California. The end of Don't Worry Darling answers any lingering questions that audiences had throughout the movie and explains the big mystery at the heart of the story.

The controversial movie Don't Worry Darling also has an ending that got people talking. At the end of Don't Worry Darling, Jack tells Alice where they really are and what Victory actually is. She is shocked as she truly had no idea what was going on. Alice kills him by taking a glass and hitting him with it.

While this is satisfying, since Jack has been lying to Alice and treating her terribly since the beginning of the movie, it's also a problem for Alice. Alice learns that Bunny knew the true story of Victory and was okay with it. Shelley (Gemma Chan) kills Frank because she wants to run Victory, which proves once again that Alice has no idea who she can trust.

The Don't Worry Darling ending is fairly powerful as Alice goes to the Victory Headquarters, sees Jack in her mind, and with her hand on the window, Frank's employees come close to her. Alice escapes into the real world and when the screen goes black, audiences hear Alice breathing, safe and sound.

One of the best horror movies based on a book is The Stepford Wives, which was written by Ira Levin and published in 1972. It feels impossible not to compare Don't Worry Darling to The Stepford Wives. While the stories are different, and the housewives living in The Stepford Wives are in the real wold and not a simulation, the themes are definitely the same. But since The Stepford Wives was published several decades ago, with two movie adaptations in 1975 and 2004, it's hard to say that Don't Worry Darling feels necessary.

What Is The Twist Ending Of Don't Worry Darling?

Alice driving and looking upset in Don't Worry Darling

The twist ending of Don't Worry Darling is that Victory is actually a simulation. Frank (Chris Pine) came up with this idea because he wanted men to be able to control women and live as if it's still the 1950s. Alice is understandably horrified to learn about what Victory really is. Frank, Jack, and the other men think that it's a great idea since they want to be in control. Alice, of course, knows that it's a sexist and abusive place and that she has to leave at all costs.

One of the most important parts of the Don't Worry Darling ending is that when Alice kills Jack, she kills him in Victory's simulation and also in the real world. How this can happen is never explained, however. And this is definitely something that fans have questions about. Critics didn't love Don't Worry Darling and the movie has some major plot holes.

While Don't Worry Darling is meant to tell an empowering feminist story, the movie's marketing focused on the sex scenes, which was a shame. And the ending of Don't Worry Darling doesn't quite feel complete. It's hard to say that it has one of the best movie twist endings because, while Alice does kill her sexist husband and escape from the sexist simulation of Victory, the ending ultimately falls flat.

Does The Ending Of Don't Worry Darling Work?

The cast of Don't Worry Darling

There are some things that don't make sense in Don't Worry Darling, including why Jack and Alice's real selves are still living in the real world and no one is the wiser. The explanation that Alice was a surgeon and Jack was upset that she was busy and successful is a little lame. The consensus appears to be that while Don't Worry Darling makes an interesting attempt at a big twist ending, it doesn't have the same impact as other movies in the thriller and horror genre.

Even though Alice accomplishes her goal of escaping Victory and going back to the real world at the end of Don't Worry Darling, there's something missing from the final scenes. It might be because Alice isn't a very complex character and audiences don't learn enough about her. There's also the fact that unlike unpredictable horror movie plot twists, it's very easy to guess what happens in Don't Worry Darling, which makes the twist less interesting.
