Doctor Who: "The Interstellar Song Contest" Revealed Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Has An Angry Side

Doctor Who Fans Have Been Patiently Waiting For This Over Two Seasons

The Fifteenth Doctor has impressed most Doctor Who fans throughout his two seasons, with Ncuti Gatwa bringing no shortage of energy and charisma to the role. However, there has been one consistent issue that has frustrated audiences throughout his time in the role, which is the fact that the Doctor hasn't shown any real fire and has instead been overly emotional. While there's nothing wrong with the Doctor being that way, the issue has come from the fact that this version of the titular character has tended to cry in every single episode, which has instantly devalued its impact. That led to a lack of fury and anger from him, which is different from the Time Lord. Typically, the Doctor will showcase some fury throughout a season by giving an impassioned speech and proving his intelligence, but the Fifteenth Doctor hasn't done that. However, that was until "The Interstellar Song Contest" when everything changed.

The Doctor and Belinda Chandra end up being split for a portion of the episode, which leads him to believe she floated out of the arena into space, where she would have frozen. That's why he unleashed all of his fury as he spoke to his nemesis via an intercom-style video system, which instantly made people stand up and pay attention. When he was finally able to confront the episode's villain, Kid, the Doctor brought out all of his anger and frustrations by essentially torturing him. It's a side of the Fifteenth Doctor that audiences have never seen, and that instantly made it refreshing. While his actions were ultimately too far and not what people expect from him, simply proving that he has that in his locker will silence a lot of the critics.

Given how kind and joyful the Fifteenth Doctor has been, seeing him act so aggressively was a genuine surprise to viewers and Belinda as well. She has been by his side throughout the entire adventure this season, and she's seen him involved in many dangerous and serious moments. Therefore, for her to be shocked proves that his actions were out of character, and that's the needed type of development. It ultimately helped to bring them closer as she realized his anger was out of the thought of losing her, while she helped to calm him down and stop him from taking his behavior too far. It was a moment that should ultimately make the Doctor's relationship with Belinda stronger moving forward, which will benefit the show overall. But her surprised response helped to make the moment even more important in the grand scheme of things and allowed his character to move forward. Seeing him be aggressive also made sense due to how emotional he is; after all, they tend to go hand in hand.

After showcasing this side of the Doctor, it is now going to be important for that mode to continue in the final two episodes of this season. Doctor Who always ramps things up toward the end of each season, and this is no different. Mrs. Flood ended up bi-generating as the Rani revealed herself, with the battle set to commence. This means that the next two episodes will be extremely dramatic and essential, opening up a more serious side of the Time Lord. People want to see him be even more serious than he has been until now, and there's no reason why that cannot happen now. Gatwa's version of the Doctor is now not only trying to take Belinda home, but he has to save Earth as a whole. That means that the stakes couldn't be any higher for what is about to happen, and that should lead to a more serious side of the Doctor being pushed once again.

Audiences have made it clear that they have had enough of the tears and emotions and instead want to see the Doctor be serious and utilize his abilities to full effect. After giving a glimpse of that part of his personality, Doctor Who must now tap into it to ensure that the last two episodes are gripping and dramatic, to ensure that this long-running storyline is brought to an end properly. Doctor Who has built up Mrs. Flood and the Rani for two seasons; therefore, the pay-off needs to be worthwhile, and bringing his furious side back will aid that.
