Getting new characters in DNA involves a multi-step process, and while it's explained in-game, some players might still be left wondering what to do. Here are the steps you need to take to unlock a new playable character:

Get Secret Letter Clues.
Use Secret Letter Clues to buy character-specific Secret Letters from the shop.
Start a Covert Commission.
Pick a character's Secret Letter before starting the mission.
Finish the Covert Commission.
Choose Character Thought rewards at the end of a Covert Commission run.
Collect 30 Thoughts to unlock a specific character on the Armoury screen.

The most reliable way to get Secret Letter Clues is to do your Daily Commissions. You get 15 Clues per day, which isn't bad considering how you need 10 Clues to buy 1 Secret Letter. Of course, this isn't the only way to get Secret Letter Clues. You can grab more through the following:

Where to Get Secret Letters in Duet Night Abyss

For the majority of characters, you can find their Secret Letters in the Covert Commissions tab of the Shop. However, not all characters can be found here — the Secret Letters for other characters not included in the shop can be obtained by completing Immersive Theater and Nocturnal Echoes, two of the endgame challenges for Duet Night Abyss.

Covert Commissions are instanced missions where you can open Secret Letters. You can view them by going to the Combat menu. The types of missions cycle every hour, and for the most part, they work just like other missions in other activities. These can be played solo or co-op if you want to play Duet Night Abyss with friends.

You'll unlock Covert Commissions fairly early into the main story, much like many other important game systems. For this reason, we strongly recommend focusing on doing DNA's main questline first before you start any serious grinding.

Once you finish a Covert Commission, you'll be able to choose between three rewards based on the Secret Letter you chose. These are split into three tiers: Gold (I), Silver (II), and Bronze (III).

Unlocking New Characters

DNA Rhythm Armoury Screen — Duet Night Abyss Rhythm Armoury Screen

Once you collect 30 Thoughts for one character, you can unlock them through Reminiscience by going to the Armoury screen. Just hover over the character you farmed for, then hit the button on the bottom-right. If you have any excess Thoughts, you can use them to unlock Intron bonuses. Introns work the same way as character dupes do in popular gacha games.
