The much-awaited trading card game (TCG) Disney Lorcana officially has a release date. First announced in August 2022, Disney Lorcana is a family-friendly card game featuring beloved Walt Disney Animation characters, like Mickey Mouse, Moana, and the Disney Princesses, designed in their original and re-imagined art styles.

According to Disney Lorcana's publisher Ravensburger, players will take on the role a power sorcerer called Illumineer, who's tasked to band together characters from "The Great Illuminary," a collection of all Disney songs and stories. Just like other TCGs, Lorcana's character cards appear to have power levels and unique mechanics, while Action cards apply effects or do specific actions, like banishing a chosen character. A number of cards have already been unveiled via social media, the most recent one being Olaf from Frozen, but the first set named Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter is expected to drop in fall 2023.

IGN has confirmed that Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter will officially launch on August 18th in local game stores in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, and France. The first drop will include a total of 200 cards that players can get through starter decks, booster packs, a gift set, and a collectible set called the Illumineer's Trove. Players can choose from three different starter decks that come with a specific list of 60 cards in two of the six magic inks, as well as one booster pack with 12 randomized cards, including one foil card and two rare cards.

As for the Illumineer's Trove, players can get eight booster packs with foil and rare cards, two deck boxes, a guidebook, and a themed storage box. For players who want unique cards, the gift set will have four booster packs that will include Hades and Mulan cards, two foil game cards, game tokens, and two oversized foil cards.

Disney Lorcana co-designer Ryan Miller told IGN that they made a "robust line of fun and exciting products" for The First Chapter to cater to beginners who just want a starter set, and serious players who want to experience the full experience with the Illumineer's Trove. He emphasized that the Disney Lorcana team is serious about expanding the TCG, and that they're here to stay. This seems to be a sign that Disney Lorcana might have its own competitive scene in the future, which would rival the likes of Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon. It will be interesting to see how players would build their decks, especially once more cards are released, and dictate the meta for the very first Disney TCG.
