The new Disenchanted trailer from Walt Disney Studios shows that although Amy Adams' Giselle found her happily ever after at the end of the first film, maintaining that picture-perfect life is no easy task in Disney Plus' sequel.
Disney's Enchanted offered audiences a genuinely heartwarming tale that also poked a bit of fun at the company's own animated feature film tropes. The story focused on a princess named Giselle who is accidentally transported from her animated fairytale world of Andalasia to the real-life New York City thanks to the machinations of an evil witch. Although James Marsden's Prince Edward, her supposed true love, follows her to the real world, Giselle finds herself falling for single parent Robert Philip (Patrick Dempsey) and becoming a mother figure to his daughter Morgan.
Naturally, Giselle and Robert fall madly in love and marry, with Giselle electing to stay in New York while Edward returns to the animated world with Idina Menzel's Nancy Tremaine, who just happened to be Robert's girlfriend. As seen in the first Disenchanted trailer, however, Giselle is finding herself disillusioned with life in the Big Apple, which prompts the family to move to the suburban town of Monroeville. In the new Disenchanted trailer, Morgan is clearly not thrilled to be moving away from her friends, Robert's daily commute back to the city for work is clearly causing some strain on the family, and Giselle feels out of place thanks to local resident Malvina Monroe, played by Maya Rudolph.
Consequently, Giselle turns to the magic of Andalasia to wish for a "fairy tale life," which turns the community of Monroeville into a fairy tale world, complete with dance numbers and sword-wielding Robert. However, Giselle begins transforming into the classic evil stepmother Disney fans are all too familiar with, the result of a curse according to Nancy. Malvina Monroe is clearly revealed to be the villain of the story, but Giselle warns her that there is only room for one evil Disney character in Disenchanted.
As to be expected with any sequel, the stakes are certainly raised in Disenchanted. Seeing more of the fairy tale world making its way to the real world will certainly offer fresh material for the film, but whether or not it can capture the charm of Enchanted remains to be seen.
Disenchanted will be released on November 18, 2022, on Disney Plus.
