Summary
- Scatological humor recurs: talking poop Digimon and poop-throwing creatures.
- The Dark Ocean arc and Dagomon introduce Lovecraft vibes, then vanish from canon.
- Human-Digimon fusions and weird evolutions (Gatomon, Monzaemon) push creepy, nonsensical limits.
Fans of Digimon have seen a lot of weird stuff over the years, from a cat that Digi-evolves into an Angel, to some of the most absurdly powerful villains becoming nerfed just a second before annihilating the world. Sometimes, things that just don't belong in the digital world make their way into it and create certain paradoxes that have fans scratching their heads for years.
Many things just don't make sense in the Digimon universe, including mysteries left unsolved for ages, questionable designs, and many dark dialogues that are not fit for its intended audience. In this list, readers will find a selection of the strangest, weirdest events throughout the franchise.
The 'Rule' of Poop Digimon
Some Designs Are Just A Talking Joke
For some strange reason, we will never know Digimon has always played with the idea of its creatures having certain biological needs. From eating to what happens at the end of the line, Digimon work like living and breathing creatures, and that's perfectly normal, even for Digital Monsters. Something extremely weird, though, is that strange obsession with scatological jokes the series has. From Digimon who are just a huge pile of smelly slime (Numemon, Raremon) to literal talking feces (Scumon), something opposed to the incredible designs the series has.
Except for Numemon, who has a strange fate besides being a slug that throws feces at its enemies, and a perfectly reasonable explanation for its weird evolution, the rest of the 'Poop' Digimon do not follow any kind of rule and are just like that because: Why not? The Digimon Anime has a weird obsession with making scatological puns, and it just doesn't make any sense. Like that time when Digimon didn't make it to the bathroom and their Tamers had to clean the mess (in Digimon Adventure), or the many creatures that hurl poop as part of their attacks.
Hikari's Encounter With Lovecraftian Entities
Another Unsolved Mystery Of The Digimon Universe
In Digimon Adventures 2, Hikari (Tai's lil' sister) joins the crew of Chosen Ones and starts roaming the digital world alongside her fateful (and weird) Gatomon, only this time they need to protect the Digital World from the machinations of a fallen Chosen One whose' Digivice and mind were corrupted by a strange phenomenon in a weird parallel dimension of the Digital World known as the World of Darkness, or, also known as 'The Dark Ocean.'
This place is ruled by a Lovecraftian monster known as Dagomon, who is basically Cthulu in disguise, and his minions, who wanted to rebel against his brutal rule, wanted none other but Hikari as their 'new Queen' to raise stronger offspring to prepare for the upcoming battle. Besides that weird and not-so-child-friendly reference, the plot thickens when the creatures that wanted to take Hikari with them reveal their true forms, and they are not Digimon at all. After Hikari's ironclad negative to go with them, these creatures just vanish, never to be seen again, and the Dark Ocean's existence is quickly forgotten as the plot progresses, never to be seen or used again in future seasons.
Human/Digimon Fusions
Needless To Say, Some Of Them Cross The Line
Though Digimon X-Ros Wars was the first season of the Digimon Franchise, which officially started using cross-species fusions between humans and Digimon, it was actually much sooner that this strange phenomenon began to be hinted at. In certain dialogue lines, Myotismon lets the Chosen Ones fighting against them know that he has absorbed the resentment of human souls and merged them into his body,' though that wouldn't be the last time this weird phenomenon occurs.
Later, in Season 3, we got a strange trigger for the Chosen One's partner Digimons evolving into some of the most overpowered Digimon ever: Renamon, Guilmon, and Terriermon, all reach their Mega Stages by 'fusing' in a sort of strange and awkward Sailor Moon-esque sequence, with their partners. Renamon evolves into Sakuyamon by merging with Rika, Terriermon evolves into MegaGargomon by fusing with Henry, and Guilmon reaches his Mega Stage, becoming Gallantmon, by merging with Takato. This was the first time a human-Digimon Fusion occurred in the anime, and later, it would become something more frequent, though it never ceased to be weird. One of the most notorious and infamous examples of this was Zoe in Digimon Frontiers, which became the target of criticism due to its unnecessary exposure. It was just plain weird and inappropriate for a kids' show, and it made no sense at all.
Gatomon's Evolution Line
Has Pushed The Boundaries Of Logic For Years
Everyone knows about Digimon, and it's impossible to explain evolution lines. We got Agumon having a dozen different evolution lines, depending on how it is raised, and then we got creatures like Dracomon Green, becoming a literal excavator drill. Gatomon, considered one of the best Digimon Partners in the series, has one of the strangest evolution lines: It starts with the cute but meek Nyaromon (a cat), then it evolves into the even cuter Salamon (a dog), then into Gatomon (a cat again), and to everyone's surprise at the time, it reached the Ultimate stage, becoming Angewomon.
Now, besides pointing out the obvious mismatched species at the start of the evolution line, and then jumping into becoming an anthropomorphic girl with wings and a pink scarf (take note of that scarf) Gatomon's line takes a stranger twist during the Digimon Adventure 02 movie (which so happens to have one of the longest movie titles ever seen) evolving into a huge dog-like Pink Dragon called Magnadramon. And if readers remember the scarf Angewomon held, it was actually MagnaDramon's hide, which makes the evolution even weirder, taking into consideration she dumps her human skin and gets into a (sort of) furry costume that looks like Falcor from The Never Ending Story. Even the Sphinxmon Armor Evolution from Adventures 2 made more sense than that.
Monzaemon's Secret
An Obscure Evolution Line That Only True Fans Know About
As mentioned before, Digimon has some weird evolution lines, but one of the weirdest and darkest of them all is the Agumon-WaruMonzaemon line, something that was kept in the dark for quite a long time for those following the anime, though, for fans of Digimon World (the game series), this was revealed as canon when encountering Monzaemon's costume when visiting Toy Town.
This evolution line begins with an Agumon neglected by its owner, whose data is corrupted for being filthy and angry at its tamer, and then evolves into Numemon. Numemon, with its Poop Toss signature move, evolves only by finding a Monzaemon costume and getting inside it. Monzaemon absorbs the data from a (deprecated) unknown evolution line, and though it becomes a Vaccine Digimon again, its corrupted nature turns Monzaemon into WaruMonzaemon. The Mega Stage of this strange line has two weird details worth mentioning: One is that the costume is filled with stitches and even breaking in the belly, revealing that something is twitching inside, carrying the will of this dark creature; the second is the fact that its left arm is made out of what appears to be a Grizzlymon's Paw.
In Digimon, there is a world parallel to the human verse known as the digital world. This place is home to creatures called digital monsters. These friendly beings partner up with the kids of the human world to protect both realms from the clutches of evil. Digimon can become stronger through the power of digivolution.
