Summary

  • The cancelation of Bosch: Legacy was likely due to the use of a flawed algorithm by Amazon.
  • The Save Bosch: Legacy petition, with over 31,000 signatures, shows the financial viability of the show's renewal.
  • Fan-based calculations highlight the importance of passionate fanbases over algorithms for TV show renewals.

The fans of Bosch: Legacy have spent the last seven months trying to figure out why the show was canceled because Amazon has failed to give them a proper reason. The streamer initially tried to convince the fans that it was all part of a planned hand-off to the Ballard spin-off, but this was officially debunked when the cast and crew began speaking out. A new theory as to why Bosch: Legacy might have been canceled has emerged, and it's all to do with an algorithm that is used to determine which shows are worthy of further investment.

Streamers like Amazon use this algorithm to weigh up if it's financially viable to renew television shows. However, if Amazon used this algorithm without taking into consideration other factors like the passionate fanbase, then that would be deeply flawed. Of course, nobody but Amazon knows the real reason why they canceled Bosch: Legacy, because they have remained silent. Seven months of questions could have been avoided if they'd just been honest, but the Bosch: Legacy cancelation cover-up is out there now, and the fans want answers.

An Algorithm Was Likely Used To Decide Bosch: Legacy's Cancelation But The Fan Backlash Strongly Suggests It Was The Wrong Decision

An algorithm that decides what television shows to renew and cancel is supposedly made up of several different factors, including viewership numbers, financial performance and critical response. The algorithm isn't a precise calculation by any measure, and it's very formulaic, just like a lot of Amazon's future slate of television shows. It looks like this algorithm could have been used to assist Amazon with their decision to cancel Bosch: Legacy after just three seasons. However, the algorithm isn't capable of taking into account the huge legion of fans who love the show, and this is one of the reasons why the Save Bosch: Legacy petition was founded by Osokwe Vasquez and the members of the Bosch Pit Facebook group, and it currently has over 31,000 signatures. In an exclusive interview with The Best War Games, Vasquez stated:

We want every fan of Bosch: Legacy to make their frustration known through this petition. These are real people, Amazon. Real fans. Don’t listen to an algorithm. Listen to them.

As Titus Welliver stated on the Today Show: 'The fans feel they have ownership of Bosch: Legacy and they'll decide when it should end. Vasquez elaborated on how the algorithm is used to help companies like Amazon make decisions:

They put Bosch: Legacy into an algorithm. And the algorithm says, 'Okay, they’re going into their fourth season. Does it make financial sense to do this show anymore?’ It's kind of a silly way of doing business, though, in my opinion, because, yeah, you're in season four; the return on investment is not going to be as high. That’s normal. But the real quick is, is there a return on investment?

Hollywood producer, Adam Leipzig, suggested that Amazon didn't see the sense in continuing Bosch: Legacy because it was costing them too much money, with each season being more expensive than the previous one. However, Vasquez was keen to dig into the most important question : Is there a return on the investment if Amazon renewed Bosch: Legacy?

The Save Bosch: Legacy Petition Has Actually Proven That The Show Should Have Been Renewed And The Algorithm Was Flawed

Osokwe Vasquez used a very straightforward method to decide if Bosch: Legacy should be renewed based on the most important factor of all: The Fans:

Let's do a little math here. I think every year they charge us: How much? $139 for Prime. And so $139 by 31,000 fans. You're already looking at over four million dollars. What are you doing with that money? What other show is that going to?

A bit of math using the signatures on the Save Bosch: Legacy petition makes a lot more sense than using an algorithm to make decisions. 31,000 signatures on the Save Bosch: Legacy petition isn't even the exact number of fans who want the show to continue, with so many more out there who still need to be made aware of the growing movement. However, 31,000 fans who subscribe to Prime Video equates to a staggering $4 million, which more than justifies a continuation of Bosch: Legacy. Vasquez also raised concerns about this same algorithm being used to judge the Ballard spin-off:

That same pesky algorithm is going to look at Ballard and be like, ‘No, this doesn't work.’ And I don't think people get that. That's the part of the algorithm that sucks. Sure, it’ll adjust itself because Ballard is in its first season. So, the expectations will be different. But if you lose half your audience, you're potentially screwed. Amazon won’t turn around and say, 'We'll give you four seasons to rebuild your audience.' So, yeah, this is a fight for Bosch: Legacy, Ballard, and any other shows we can get from the Connelly-verse.

Amazon's Bosch Facebook account has 252,000 followers, so that is proof that the fan base is bigger than the 31,000 who have discovered the petition so far. Let's do the math again: $139 by 252,000 = $35 million plus a bit of loose change. The fight is on to Save Bosch: Legacy, the Ballard spin-off, and the Connelly-verse as a whole, and highlighting straightforward fan-based calculations as opposed to what a 'pesky algorithm' comes up with makes more sense. You're welcome, Amazon. No pencil pushing or overpriced suits needed: just some very simple fan logic.
