Summary
- Ritual Runes generate offerings to activate Invocation Runes - balance offerings for optimal effect.
- Combining Ritual and Invocation Runes creates Runewords with specific effects in Diablo 4.
- The Vessel of Hatred expansion added new Runewords and updated existing ones, shaking up the Season 7 meta.
There are a lot of new mechanics that have been added to Diablo 4 with the first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, and the Hatred Rising season 6 content. Included among new and returning features like Mercenaries, The Dark Citadel raid, and the new Spiritborn class is the return of the Runes and Runewords system. When you combine a Ritual Rune and an Invocation Rune on a piece of gear with two sockets, it will create a Runeword.
Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred - Tributes & Bargains, Explained
Making use of Tributes and Bargains is the best way to get the perfect gear in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred's endgame.
The Trigger and Effect for this Runeword depends on the Ritual Rune and Invocation Rune used to create it. Pay close attention to the Offerings generated and required by these Runes, as they affect how reliably you can trigger your Diablo 4 Runeword effect. A Ritual Rune that only generates 5x offerings won't do much to empower an Invocation Rune that requires 1000x, after all.
Updated January 23, 2025, by Abigail Angell: The official start of the Season of Witchcraft has added three new Runewords to Diablo 4 - Nagu, Igni, and Chac. It also includes balance changes for 15 of the Runewords launched with Vessel of Hatred. These balancing changes and new content, while expected after the addition of such an impactful mechanic, change the meta substantially in Season 7.
All Ritual Runes in Diablo 4
Every D4 Ritual Rune: Triggers & Offerings Generated
In Diablo 4, all Ritual Runes essentially function as Trigger runes. These Runes have a burning yellow engraving and point upward in your inventory, indicating that they must be placed into the Top slot of your two-Socket piece of gea r.
When you perform the listed action on each Ritual Rune, it will generate a certain amount of Offering, which contributes to the effect of a tied Invocation Rune. When you perform the listed action for every Ritual Rune enough times to reach the required Offerings for your Invocation Rune, the Invocation Rune effect will trigger.

All Invocation Runes in Diablo 4
Every D4 Invocation Rune: Effects, Overflow, & Offerings Required
All Invocation Runes in Diablo 4 essentially function as Effect or Ability runes. These Runes have a purple engraving and point downward in your inventory, indicating that they must be placed into the Bottom slot of your two-Socket piece of gear.
When enough Offerings are generated with your Ritual Rune to reach the required Offerings of your Invocation Rune, the listed Effect or granted Ability on the Invocation Rune will activate. If you generate more Offerings than are required for some Invocation Runes, Diablo 4 players will boost the Effect listed. This is called an Overflow Effect.
Most Invocation Runes cannot trigger more than once every second, while some take two or even as many as six seconds to recharge, like the Runes that grant another class Skill. Watch the purple buff on your buff bar to see how many Offerings are required for the listed Effect to activate.
