Upon completing the campaign in Diablo 4, players will unlock the ability to skip the main story on all their alt characters. While this feature can be activated at any time, the selection is permanent. As such, it is important that fans think carefully about the benefits and drawbacks of skipping the campaign in Diablo 4 before confirming the choice, and this guide is here to assist with that endeavor.
Diablo 4: Should You Skip the Campaign
If a player's primary interest is leveling up and reaching the endgame as quickly as possible, then they are absolutely advised to skip the campaign. Indeed, there are several options for leveling up alts in Diablo 4 that are much faster than replaying the Acts, including grinding dungeons and engaging with the Tree of Whispers' Grim Favors system.
That said, there is a drawback to skipping the campaign that is worth noting. Specifically, fans will miss out on some powerful items that are guaranteed to be awarded while working through main story missions, including Lilith's Unique Mother's Embrace Ring. That item can be obtained as a random drop if it is not received during Diablo 4's campaign, though, and it alone should not push players toward repeating the main story.
In fact, the only real reasons for fans to replay the campaign on their alts are if they want to revisit the story or if they want some direction as they explore the map again. Indeed, players will find that Diablo 4's map is covered in fog on their alts, regardless of how much they have explored on their other characters, and working through the main story is a reasonable way to approach revealing it.
While map exploration does not carry over to alts, there are a variety of things that are retained on new characters. For example, all Skill Points, Paragon Points, and Potion charges that are earned through Diablo 4's Renown system are shared across all characters. Players can still earn XP and Gold by increasing the Renown of their alts, though, which means that the system still has value on secondary characters.
All the Altars of Lilith and Codex of Power entries that have been unlocked also carry over to alts, as do items in the Stash, Gold, Obols, and Upgrade Materials. This gives secondary characters a significant advantage over first characters, regardless of if they skip the campaign or not, and players should find it quite easy to push them into the endgame.
Diablo 4 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
