Summary

  • Season of the Malignant in Diablo 4 fell short of players' expectations, with limited changes to gameplay and loot, leading some to stick to the Eternal Realm.
  • The Caged Heart of the Barber is a highly sought-after item in Diablo 4's Season 1, offering players the ability to store and unleash damage dealt on critical strikes.
  • This powerful item can be used by any character and build, making it a fan favorite, but new expansions and seasons should not rely solely on one item to drive hype.

One of the main reasons why players were excited ahead of Diablo 4's first season was the addition of new content, stories, and loot that would keep them engaged for months to come. Season of the Malignant in Diablo 4 was not exactly what most players expected, as what was thought to be many innovations to the gameplay loop turned out as a limited set of changes, to the point that some gamers decided to stick to the Eternal Realm. This doesn't mean that all of the things that came with the first season are bad or just not enough, but rather that it can be a learning experience for Blizzard after all the feedback, especially when the one thing players are most excited about is mainly one item.

Diablo 4's loot should play a major role in winning players back with every update, and Season of the Malignant did in fact add multiple Unique items and seasonal Aspects to the pool, which can make some builds more viable and enticing. However, some of the game's best Uniques remain quite rare throughout, and some players can easily get all the way to level 100 and still not have them. However, there is one item that Diablo 4 fans can look forward to in Season 1 that will most likely be available to all those who engage with the seasonal content, and that's the Caged Heart of the Barber.

Why Diablo 4's Heart of the Barber Carries Season 1

Malignant Hearts in Diablo 4 function quite similarly to the base game's Gems, in that they can be socketed in particular slots depending on a specific Heart's type, but the difference is that they can't be removed from the socket - only replaced. Malignant Hearts are not too difficult to come by, and the Caged Heart of the Barber is often considered the single best one.

The Caged Heart of the Barber is a Wrathful Heart, and it allows players to "store" the damage they deal to then unleash it. The effect can only be activated on critical strikes, and it makes the target store all the damage dealt to them for a window of time that varies between 2 and 4 seconds, which then is unleashed in an area around the target. Diablo 4's Dungeons have increased enemy density now, and with this incredible tool any build can become amazing when it comes to clearing adds, and it also makes for quite a flexible option in many scenarios.

For slower builds that require a lot of buildup to deal incredible amounts of damage, such as the Diablo 4 Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian build, it's best to use a Caged Heart of the Barber with at least three seconds out of four as its roll. This is to optimize damage when the effect then triggers the AoE explosions. On the other hand, for faster builds that are capable of spamming abilities, it may be preferable to have a lower roll on the time window in order to still deal a lot of damage, but without running risking survivability.

This item is not only very powerful, but it can be used by virtually any character and build in the game, at times even enabling some playstyles. As such, it's already become a fan favorite for Diablo 4 players, and it shows that Blizzard has many paths yet to explore when it comes to adding new items and loot, both to the base game and with Season 2 in October. However, a single item shouldn't drive the hype for new Diablo 4 expansions and seasons, and the seasonal model has still a long way to go.

Diablo 4 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
