Summary

  • Diablo 4 PC players facing memory leaks causing crashes.
  • Memory issues previously seen in past seasons resurfacing.
  • Blizzard expectantly working on fix for Season 8 bugs.

Diablo 4 players on PC are reporting memory leaks. The issue is being noticed a few days after the start of Diablo 4's eighth season and is leading to frustrating situations.

This is not the first time Diablo 4 players have experienced high memory consumption on their PCs, resulting in poor performance and eventual game crashes. In 2023, players had VRAM problems that in some cases could only be solved by restarting the game. The same situation happened in Diablo 4 Season 7, and even players with high-spec PCs found it difficult to play for more than an hour before the game shut down completely. Memory leak problems are no stranger to the Diablo 4 community, and it looks like they're affecting players again.

Here's a brief explainer for Reliquaries, Diablo 4's updated take on the tried-and-tested battle pass.

Several Diablo 4 players are reporting memory leaks in the PC version. On Reddit, user CoolRatio9477 shared how their experience is being affected, saying that even if they stay idle in Diablo 4's character selection screen, their PC is registering RAM spikes of between 15-20 GB. According to them, the problem is extending to VRAM as well, with portal and zone transitions causing usage to peak at 13-14 GB. The OP says he's experiencing crashes approximately every 30–45 minutes with the Fenris error, and the only way to release memory is by fully closing Diablo 4.

High Memory Usage Is Haunting Diablo 4 Players on PC Again

CoolRatio9477 posted a bug report on the Blizzard forum, which has 89 posts from various players who are experiencing the same problem. Also on Reddit, user Blubbpaule said they are suffering from memory leaks that caused Diablo 4 to crash every 10 minutes. In the comments section, one player said that in Season 7 of Diablo 4, their PC's RAM consumption was 19 GB, and in Season 8 it jumped to around 28 GB. Another Redditor shared a workaround that a player gave two years ago and involves changing the paging file size, which improved the experience for several community members.

The new RAM and VRAM leak hasn't been officially addressed yet, but with players starting to talk about it more, the expectation is that the devs will release a fix for it soon. This will allow players to have a more engaging experience with Diablo 4 Season 8, which started on April 29 and brought new content such as the return of Belial. Blizzard has also added Boss Powers, which works similarly to Witch and Vampiric Powers, and the Diablo 4 x Berserk crossover, with the game adding content based on Kentaro Miura's iconic manga.
