Rod Fergusson, the Diablo series boss who oversaw the development and launch of Diablo 4 along with Diablo 2: Resurrected and Diablo Immortal, is officially leaving Blizzard. Diablo 4 launched in 2023 to mostly positive reviews, and while its endgame and initial post-launch support were criticized, later updates and the release of the Vessel of Hatred expansion have kept dedicated fans playing the game years later.
This Diablo content was led by Rod Fergusson, who joined Blizzard after spending time at Black Tusk/The Coalition to work on the Gears of War series. While at The Coalition, Fergusson oversaw the development of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Gears of War 4, and Gears 5. It was a shock announcement when Fergusson left The Coalition to join Blizzard in 2020, and now that five-year endeavor has come to an end.

Diablo Boss Rod Fergusson is Leaving Blizzard
In a surprise announcement on Twitter, Fergusson confirmed that he is leaving Blizzard and the Diablo franchise behind. Fergusson reassured fans that the Diablo teams are "set up for success" and that there is "an exciting slate of releases ahead." Fergusson did not reveal what he plans on doing next, but he did say that he is "proud" of what was built during his time at Blizzard, and he is "looking forward" to what come next for Diablo.
As for what's next for the Diablo franchise, fans can expect continued updates and support for Diablo Immortal on mobile and Diablo 4 on PC and consoles. Those waiting for another expansion for Diablo 4 will have to wait until 2026. There are theories about what Diablo 4 Expansion 2 might entail, but nothing official has been confirmed at the time of this writing. Chances are it will include a new class and new region to explore, at the very least.
It's also assumed that Diablo 4 will be making its way to a new platform at some point in the near future. Blizzard brought Diablo 3 to the original Switch back in the day, and rumor is that Diablo 4 will be coming to the Switch 2, complete with mouse control support. Time will tell if there is any truth to those rumors, but regardless, the Diablo series will be moving forward without Rod Fergusson at the wheel.
