Summary
- Diablo 4 players spent over $150 million on microtransactions.
- Players can purchase Platinum for bundles and battle passes.
- Despite controversies, Diablo 4 continues to generate revenue.
Diablo 4 players have spent more than $150 million on the game's microtransactions. The information comes from one of the team members, who additionally revealed how much Diablo 4 has generated in revenue from launch to date, giving a dimension of the profits made by Blizzard with the title.
By purchasing Platinum, the game's premium currency, players can acquire a variety of bundles with cosmetic items for their characters and mounts. Another way to add a different flair to their adventures through Sanctuary is to buy the Diablo 4 battle pass, with which players unlock rewards by playing and leveling up, like other games such as Fortnite and Apex Legends. Now, over a year after its release, Diablo 4 players are discovering the impressive revenue figures made by the new entry in the franchise, and how much of that sum comes from microtransactions.
As reported by Gamepressure, Harrison Froeschke, Diablo 4's Senior Product Manager, revealed that players have spent more than $150 million on microtransactions. On his LinkedIn profile, Froeschke details his work on monetizing Diablo 4, including custom discounts, bundles, and pricing, leading to a sum of over $150 million. The Senior Product Manager's profile also reveals that from pre-order to date, Blizzard's ARPG has generated over $1 billion in revenue, with microtransactions accounting for around 15% of the total.
Diablo 4 Didn't Escape the Microtransaction Controversy
Despite making an impressive sum from its monetization, Diablo 4 didn't escape the franchise's controversial relationship with microtransactions. Shortly after the game hit the shelves, players were already showing their frustration with the release of equipment sets costing $28 USD. Another well-known case was the horse armor bundles, whose prices made players spend more money than needed to get enough Platinum and buy the cosmetics. A third episode that was equally talked about was the release of the Father's Judgment Collection, a Diablo 4 mount bundle priced at $65 USD.
Even with the controversies faced with monetization, Diablo 4 is heading towards one of the crucial moments since its launch. From September 4-11, players were able to test the content to be released with the game's sixth season, including adjustments to characters, items, and new features. As well as being highly anticipated as it marks the return of Mephisto to the Diablo franchise, the sixth season will be released in conjunction with Vessel of Hatred, the game's first expansion, which will introduce the new Spiritborn class and take players through the jungles of Nahantu.
