Summary

  • Path of Exile 2's recent 0.1.1 patch improves game features, forcing Diablo 4's Season 7 to be better than great.
  • Diablo 4 is rumored to launch on Nintendo Switch 2, potentially beating Path of Exile 2 for the console.
  • Diablo 4's potential Switch 2 launch could provide a boost as the game competes with Path of Exile 2.

Ever since it came out in early access, Path of Exile 2 has been at the forefront of many discussions regarding action RPGs, arguably overshadowing Diablo 4 just a few months after the release of its first big expansion. While Vessel of Hatred was a mixed bag for some fans, mainly due to the fact that the campaign didn't live up to the expectations of longtime players, Diablo 4's Season 7 just started and it's racking up some positivity and hype thanks to the extra loot and exploding frogs. On top of that, according to recent rumors, Diablo 4 may have an ace up its sleeve when it comes to its race against Path of Exile 2 for the best ARPG.

Path of Exile 2's 0.1.1 patch was a game-changer and added many features that fans were vocal about, including the ability to overwrite Runes and other socketables in weapons and armor and the introduction of loot filters for consoles. In fact, before this update, it was much more frustrating to play the game on consoles due to the way trading works in Path of Exile 2. Still, Diablo 4 was recently rumored to be a launch title for the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2, which would be a big win for the Blizzard game.

Diablo 4 Launching on Nintendo Switch 2 Would Be The Win it Needs After Path of Exile 2's Launch

Unless Grinding Gear Games kept it a secret due to the lack of official news regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 until last week, it seems plausible that the upcoming console is not on Path of Exile 2's radar for its early access period. Considering how complex the game can be, with intricacies for trading on console, it wouldn't come as a surprise if Path of Exile 2 completely skipped the Switch 2 or only came out on Nintendo's new console further down the line.

Instead, recent rumors state that there will be several games under the Microsoft umbrella on the Nintendo Switch 2, spanning from launch to shortly after. This list includes Diablo 4, and with the Nintendo Switch 2's mouse-like Joy-Cons, it wouldn't be hard to believe the game is finally come to the Japanese handheld console. Furthermore, Diablo 4 has been out for over one year, unlike Path of Exile 2, which just launched in early access last December, so it would make sense for Blizzard to have had enough time and resources to pour into a Nintendo Switch 2 port.

Why Diablo 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 Makes Sense Even Without Rumors

Even if the rumors don't turn out to be true, it still seems like a logical progression for Diablo 4 to launch on Nintendo Switch 2. This is because Diablo 3 was and still is available on the regular Switch, whereas Diablo 4 never was. The most likely reason for it is that Diablo 4 is more demanding from a technical standpoint, so the regular Switch's hardware is enough for its predecessor, but not the sequel. However, with improved hardware and console power, Diablo 4 could fit right at home on the Nintendo Switch 2, and it could make for a good launch title despite the game being already available on other consoles and PC.

At the very least, Diablo 4 could beat Path of Exile 2 to the punch when it comes to launching on the Nintendo Switch 2, and considering how Blizzard's ARPG needs a win, this could be a great way to achieve it. Currently, Nintendo has confirmed April 2, 2025, as the next big date for the Switch 2. This is when the first Nintendo Direct about the console will take place, and if the company wants to keep its cards close to its chest regarding first-party launch titles, April could be a good time to confirm or debunk the rumors about Diablo 4 being a launch title for the Switch 2. As such, fans should stay tuned, but it seems like a concrete possibility so far.
