Echo of Varshan is a new endgame boss added in Diablo 4 Season 2. Although summoning it is necessary, this boss drops a number of Unique Items that make great additions to endgame builds. To summon Varshan, players will need to gather rare materials before sacrificing them at an altar - which most will have to do several times to get the item of their choice.
If this seems like a daunting prospect, keep reading for tips on how to quickly farm the summoning materials for the Echo of Varshan, tips for the fight, and a list of all items he can drop upon death.
Updated on September 5th, 2024, by Abigail Angell: Not only has Varshan's method of summoning been changed since his release, but loot tables for Diablo 4's end-game bosses have undergone big changes in Season 5. Chief among these changes is that all Tormented Bosses have the same Mythic Unique Item drop chance.

How to Find and Summon Echo of Varshan in Diablo 4
To find Echo of Varshan in Diablo 4, fans should go to the Tree of Whispers Waypoint. Behind the tree, they will find a hole called the Malignant Burrow. Entering this burrow will take the player to a small dungeon, at the end of which sits an altar. This is where summoning materials are sacrificed.
To summon Varshan, gamers have to be in World Tier 3 or World Tier 4, and in possession of Malignant Hearts. For the standard Varshan summon, players need 2 Malignant Hearts in World Tier 3, and 5 Malignant Hearts in World Tier 4. Tormented summons require triple the number of hearts and a Stygian Stone.

Here is how to beat the Wandering Death boss and when it will spawn in Diablo 4.
The Best Way To Farm Malignant Hearts
Players have 2 main ways to farm Malignant Hearts:
- Perform Grim Favors. For them, players receive the Tree of Whispers cache reward, from which they are guaranteed to receive at least one Malignant Heart.
- One Malignant Heart drops from each Grotesque Debtor - a mini-boss that spawns around Whispers and World Bosses.
Grotesque Debtors will be signaled to the player with a text announcement as they spawn. Watch the top of your screen during World Bosses to avoid missing out.
Other Ways To Farm Malignant Hearts
While the above methods have the highest return for time spent, and the best chances of obtaining Malignant Hearts, players can also receive Boss Summoning Materials from Helltide Chests, Infernal Hordes runs, and at the end of Nightmare Dungeons.
Varshan previously required an assortment of body parts to summon, but the Gurgling Head, Trembling Hand, and Blackened Femur have been removed as requirements. Players who have copies of these items can transmute them into Malignant Hearts using the Alchemist at no cost.
