Regardless of the quality of your equipment and weapons, it can hardly be called perfect without a few gems. Starting from level 15, you will receive these valuable stones almost everywhere, and when you reach 20, you can improve them using the services of Jeweler. However, all this makes no sense until you learn how to add gems to sockets, filling your equipment in Diablo 4 with various effects.

In addition to the fact that there are seven different types of gems, each can give different effects depending on where you place them. And with the ability to add additional sockets to some items, you can create something amazing. However, first, it's worth starting with the basics and learning how to socket gems into items and safely remove them for reuse.

How To Socket Gems in Diablo 4

Diablo 4 map

While Jeweler offers a wide range of gem-related services in Diablo 4, luckily, players can add them to the item socket themselves. To do this, you only need to open your inventory, hover over the desired gem, and pull it onto the selected item by holding the right mouse button. But note that not all items have sockets, especially at low levels, and not every item can have a specific gem added to it. Simply put, by pulling a gem, the game will tell you where you can place it.

It is worth noting that in the description of each gem, there are three different effects, but this does not mean that your item will receive all three. Read the description carefully, as your item will only receive one effect depending on what type of item you place the gem into. This limitation requires you to choose whether to add the gem into boots or amulet, depending on what is needed for your build.

Although you can add gems to sockets at any character level, the ability to add more sockets to an item only appears after you reach level 20 and talk to the Jeweler. This NPC offers plenty of services that will be useful to you throughout your gameplay:

  • Firstly, gems have five rarity levels that affect the effectiveness of the buff. Jewelers combine three weak gems into a rarer one.
  • You can also extract gems from the sockets of your items. As you level up, you will find more powerful equipment where you can place your old gems. The Jeweler will help you get the gems safely if you can pay for his services with gold and Scattered Prism.
  • In addition, even some of the best items may not have sockets or only have one. The Jeweler can add a socket for another gem. But this doesn't work for all items, so you must check each.

That's all you need to know about how to add gems to sockets. Finally, please note that if you decide to salvage gear in the blacksmith, the gems socketed in this item will disappear along with the item. So keep this in mind before you accidentally make a mistake.
