Season of Blood added a bunch of new bosses to Diablo 4, and that includes Zir, the vampire overlord behind the entire season's conflict. Players got to fight him at the end of the seasonal storyline, and now they can summon his echo to fight with Exquisite Blood as an endgame activity.
Diablo 4: How to Unlock Lord Zir Boss & Rewards
Here's everything you need to know about Lord Zir in Diablo 4, including how to summon the boss.
More than just a fun callback to the season, farming Lord Zir can be quite the lucrative activity in Diablo 4. This boss drops a wealth of high-level items, Unique Items, and even Mythic Uniques - though players are going to need a healthy stock of Exquisite Blood if they want to fight vampire over and over again. Here's how to get some and what to do with them.
Updated on August 23rd, 2024, by Abigail Angell: Seasons 4 & 5 have resulted in sweeping changes regarding Diablo 4's items, endgame loop, and crafting system. Among these changes is a revamp of Helltides, including new ways to farm Exquisite Blood, which is more efficient by far than was previously possible. Due to how reliably the new Blood Maidens drop Exquisite Blood, and the new items added to Lord Zir's Loot Table, killing Blood Maidens has become one of the game's most popular Overworld activities.
How to Get Exquisite Blood in Diablo 4
Exquisite Blood is a relatively rare resource that only drops from specific activities:
- World Bosses - Either from the Boss itself or from the associated Chests
- Legion Events - From Base and Mastery Chests
- Helltides - From Tortured Gift Chests, Hellborne, Helltide Assasins, and Blood Maidens
- Whispers Caches - Has a Chance to Drop all Boss Summon Materials, except those for Duriel & Andariel
- Treasure Goblins - Killing a Treasure Goblin drops one summoning material for Lord Zir, Beast in the Ice, Varshan, or Gregoire.
- Nightmare Dungeons - Boss Summon Materials for Lord Zir, Beast in the Ice, Varshan, and Gregoire often drop as part of the end loot in Nightmare Dungeons.
However, while this list gives players several avenues to farm Exquisite Blood, some are more reliable than others - making them a more efficient means to farm large quantities of the resource.
Boss Summoning Materials such as Exquisite Blood can also be traded between players. Therefore, if players have a hefty sum of gold to spare, they can buy Exquisite Blood using the Trade Chat Channel in the game. To activate this channel, go to the Social tab in the Options Menu, then tick the box that says Trade Chat.
The Best Way To Farm Exquisite Blood
Prior to the changes in Season 4, Legion Events were the fastest and most reliable way to farm Exquisite Blood, due to their 30-minute spawn cooldown. This strategy is still viable for those who enjoy these events, but is no longer the best option. Instead, Helltides are the end game activity of choice for farming Exquisite Blood. As an added bonus, players can also farm Living Steel at the same time.
How To Farm Exquisite Blood Via Helltides
A number of things in Helltides drop Exquisite Blood. Opening Tortured Gifts Chests, fighting bosses such as Hellborne and Helltide Assasins, and fighting the Blood Maiden all drop it. To efficiently farm Exquisite Blood and Living Steel at the same time, players should:
- Farm as many Aberrant Cinders as quickly as possible to raise their Threat Level.
- Kill any Hellborne or Helltide Assassins that spawn.
- Open any Tortured Gifts of Living Steel or Tortured Gifts of Mysteries in the Helltide Zone - collecting all Baneful Hearts that drop as well as the Boss Summoning Materials.
- When there is approximately ten to fifteen minutes left in the Helltide, head to the Blood Maiden Ritual Location (marked on the map by a horned demon icon).
- Use the collected Baneful Hearts to summon the Blood Maiden, killing her and all her minions.
- Repeat until they run out of Baneful Hearts, and/or the Helltide ends.
Going to the Blood Maiden's spawn location near the end of the Helltide will likely mean other players are there to fight her as well. Not only will this make the fight go faster, but they potentially have Baneful Hearts of their own to summon her again.
All players in the area receive the loot for fighting the Blood Maiden, not just the summoner. This makes hanging around the altar a good way to get free Material Drops.
Diablo 4: Tips For Infernal Hordes
Infernal Hordes are no joke in Diablo 4. These tips should help players survive their next encounter.
How to Summon Lord Zir
The farmable version of Lord Zir is only found in World Tier 3+. To summon the Echo of Lord Zir, head to The Darkened Way, a dungeon in the southeastern part of the Fractured Peaks. At the end of this mini-dungeon is an altar that players can interact with. This will open a popup window to sacrfice Exquisite Blood in the Ritual of Blood. Doing so immediately spawns Lord Zir.
How Much Exquisite Blood Is Required To Summon Lord Zir?
Players need a total of nine Exquisite Blood to summon Lord Zir.
How To Summon Tormented Lord Zir
Tormented Lord Zir is summoned using the same altar as the standard version. However, players will instead need 21 Exquisite Blood and Stygian Stones.
Tips For Fighting Lord Zir
The Torment-difficulty Zir boss fight includes four phases in total, and players will have to deal with a ton of fire damage, blood puddles, and the rest of the vampire lord's sinister abilities. He'll also summon Bloodseekers to help him out, so be ready to fight those guys as well. Make sure to have high resistance to Fire and Shadow to maximize survivability. If your resistance is low, Elixirs are a good solution.
