Gamers can currently play Diablo 4 for free on Steam, but it's only available for a limited time. The free period is still plenty of time for new Diablo 4 players to determine whether they like the game enough to purchase it.
It comes at a very good time for the game. Diablo 4 recently released its Season 10 update, named the Season of Infernal Chaos. The new season introduces mechanics such as Chaos Powers and Perks, which provide players with additional ways to refine their perfect build. There's a new seasonal questline, too, of course. Although it may seem overwhelming for new players, Diablo 4 does plenty to ensure that those new to the game find it easy enough to get into.

Diablo 4 is Free to Play on Steam Until October 2
Players can currently head to the Diablo 4 Steam page and download the base game for free. The Vessel of Hatred DLC is not included in this free period, but there's more than enough content in the base game to keep players busy. Those who want to try Diablo 4 should act fast, though. This free period is only active until October 2, so there are only a few days from the time of writing to pick up and try Blizzard's action RPG.
Steam also has Diablo 4 on sale at a 55% discount, bringing it down to $22.49 with an end date set for September 29. However, it's worth mentioning that the Steam Autumn Sale 2025 is set to begin when this Diablo 4 discount is slated to end, so it's certainly possible that another price reduction is lined up to begin immediately. Usually, discounts that complement free play periods last longer as a way to encourage players who enjoy the game to stick around, so it would be somewhat surprising if it weren't the same here.
In the immediate future, Blizzard's focus is on tweaking Diablo 4 Season 10 to make it the best it can be. Sweeping changes are unlikely, and there's a lot to like about the new seasonal offerings. Beyond that, the game is in a very healthy place at the moment, with players returning in droves to see what the game has to offer this season. While Blizzard hasn't managed to release a new expansion in 2025, the expectation is that one will launch last year, following up on 2024's Vessel of Hatred.
