  • Blizzard dev addresses Diablo 4 roadmap backlash, promising "good surprises" still to come.
  • The developer assured players that what’s been revealed so far isn’t everything—more is still under wraps.
  • Player complaints include comments about the roadmap’s lack of content and originality.

Blizzard's director of social and content marketing has recently addressed players’ backlash following the Diablo 4 roadmap reveal, stating that the studio has “some good surprises” that will be revealed later in the year. Since Diablo 4’s roadmap reveal, players have expressed frustration, primarily complaining about the lack of content and the feeling that it’s just a copy-and-paste job from past seasons.

Diablo 4 came out in 2023, and although it’s been quite successful, the game has faced its fair share of controversy. Upon release, the game suffered from several technical issues that Blizzard had to address with multiple updates. Moving forward from that, Diablo 4 set a record with 55,561 players on Steam after Vessel of Hatred, positioning itself in a better place. However, controversies didn’t end there, as in November, players noted that the DLC’s Dark Citadel raid-like experience didn’t support couch co-op, causing issues for fans playing Infernal Hordes via this method. Now, more backlash has arisen following the recent reveal of the game’s roadmap for 2025 and beyond.

Diablo 4 May Want to Take Notes from One Popular Game's Battle Pass

Diablo 4 may be adopting a more flexible Battle Pass with player-driven reward paths, so getting inspiration from one game could be worthwhile.

Following Diablo 4’s roadmap backlash—which includes accusations of developers being a “shadow of their former self” and comments from upset players saying the game has “failed”—Blizzard’s director of social and content marketing, Adam Fletcher, took to Twitter to address these concerns. Fletcher said that what Blizzard has revealed is not the full roadmap, emphasizing that “there are some good surprises” for players. He also explained that details tend to become scarce as the studio gets further into the year because things are still in development. However, he remains hopeful that players will be happy with the upcoming surprises.

Diablo 4 Dev Promises 'Some Good Surprises' for Players

Although Fletcher’s comment could mean good news, players have continued to complain about Diablo 4’s roadmap. One comment on Fletcher’s post accused Blizzard of “losing creativity” and showing a “lack of dev investment.” Another fan emphasized that seasons feel the same “over and over again,” pointing to the lack of skill tree improvements and class balance, among other things. Nevertheless, some players remain positive about the game, expressing enthusiasm about the surprises.

Putting Diablo 4’s controversies aside, Blizzard will bring several new things for players in 2025, including content like witchcraft powers, new collaborations, and permanent additions. Moreover, the developer teased a new expansion coming in 2026, along with a new ranking system, leaderboards, and more. While players wait for the new surprises to arrive sometime in the future, it's unclear if Blizzard will be able to handle the situation and win back players.
