One of the big talking points from the Dexter: Resurrection trailer was the fact that Peter Dinklage's character appears to be forming a group of serial killers in this show, one of which will be Dexter Morgan. How he knows about Dexter's secret is unclear. Still, his character appears to be a fan of the dark passenger and wants to utilize it to his advantage alongside other seedy individuals. This in itself is a significant disconnect from the original series because Dexter is someone who always worked alone. While he let a few people in throughout the show, those partnerships turned sour most of the time and ended up in death. Therefore, the idea of him being a team player seems like a significant character development. But what was more concerning to old-school fans was how Dexter seemed to be ditching his code, the compass that guides all of his decisions and played such a pivotal role in the series. This is what he's been taught by his adopted father, with Harry's code steering him throughout the hit show.

Harry Morgan sees what Dexter is becoming during his youth and opts to try to take his darkness and use it for good. He teaches Dexter how to kill and not be caught, which is why he's so meticulous, while he also only targets people who are deemed worthy of being murdered. These are typically guilty criminals who slip through the justice system, which is how Dexter justifies his decision to kill them in the first place. Yet in the trailer, Harry can be heard telling Dexter, "I urge you to be careful, son," to which he responds, "I'm tired of being careful." It hints that Dexter is ready to ditch the code and fully embrace his darkness and lust for blood, which would alter his personality dramatically.

Why Fans Are Going To Hate This Change in Dexter: Resurrection?

Dexter Morgan Will Go From Vigilante To Pure Villain, Making Him Unlikable

If Dexter: Resurrection does go down the path of him completely embracing his serial killer side to be part of this twisted team, then the show will be taking a significant risk. One of the reasons why Dexter was able to work so well in the first place was that he was an anti-hero. Audiences found the blood spatter analyst likable because he was ultimately doing things for society's greater good. While the manner in which he killed his victims was barbaric, and keeping blood slides as a trophy was delusional, the fact he was taking out criminals made people like him and buy into what he was doing.

That was the special ingredient in the entire story because, without Harry's code, Dexter becomes the story's villain. Someone who makes the job of the police harder and just goes around murdering people doesn't have the same connection with audiences. Dexter deciding just to kill people as part of a serial killer team would make him unlikable, and that's the opposite of what he's supposed to be. There's meant to be a charm to Dexter, a slight vulnerability, and some deep-rooted kindness and compassion. Opting to change that is going to ruffle some fans the wrong way and will no doubt lead to frustration from those who enjoyed the original series so much.

Dexter: Resurrection Must Be Careful Not To Make Too Many Alterations To Dexter Morgan

Dexter Fans Want The Show To Still Feel Similar To The Original

Dexter Morgan waking up

Anytime a spin-off show like Dexter: Resurrection is created, there is always a fine line to be walked between providing something fresh enough to make it worthwhile and paying tribute to the original. This upcoming series will have slight differences from what came before, and that's not only perfectly fine but is actively encouraged. Audiences want to see something new and fresh, and that's being provided to them in the form of location, characters, and the story itself. However, they don't want the characters who were part of the original series to completely change. These people are ultimately drawing viewers back in, with Dexter Morgan being the prime candidate for that. Without him, there wouldn't be the same level of interest, but audiences still expect him to be similar to how he was in Dexter. While he's obviously going to adapt and change to suit the circumstances of Dexter: Resurrection, turning him into a complete monster isn't the right approach, as it risks alienating the long-term fans.
