Summary

  • Dexter: Resurrection will air in July 2025, followed by a second season of Original Sin.
  • Fans speculated about time jump in Original Sin season 2, but Harry Morgan will be returning
  • Second season of Original Sin is likely to pick up shortly after season 1, exploring more of Harry Morgan's storylines.

Dexter: Resurrection is heading to television screens in July 2025, and Michael C. Hall's return will be followed by a second season of the prequel series, Original Sin, which was officially greenlit last month. Original Sin saw Patrick Gibson take on the role of young Dexter, alongside Christian Slater and Molly Brown as Harry and Debra Morgan. The latter has teased the potential timeline for the sophomore run after attending a Paramount upfront event, and it looks like it might not be set for a huge time jump.

Many fans have speculated about a possible shift in time after the events of the first season of Original Sin, but Molly Brown has revealed that Christian Slater will also be back as Harry Morgan. This means it's not likely events will shift too far into the future, as the character hasn't got much longer left to live.

Dexter: Original Sin was a huge hit for Paramount + with Showtime when it debuted in December 2024, and fans were eagerly awaiting news of a renewal after it finished airing in February 2025. To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Original Sin was renewed in April, and Dexter's origin stories will continue for at least one more season. The big debate about the prequel series has been the inevitable fate of Harry Morgan, who doesn't have much longer left to live. However, Molly Brown has seemingly confirmed on her Instagram page that the Morgan patriarch has at least one more season left in him:

Officially picked up for Season 2, which means Christian Slater is sentenced to another year of press with me.

As sentences go, another year of working with Christian Slater in one of the best television universes around is the equivalent of getting away with murder. Of course, Brown is being funny, and she's clearly delighted to be sharing the screen with one of Hollywood's best for at least one more year.

Dexter: Original Sin Showrunner, Clyde Phillips Has Previously Stated That He'd Like To Keep Harry Morgan Around For As Long As Possible

One of the highlights of Dexter: Original Sin season 1 was the exploration of Harry Morgan, in both the 1970s timeline, and the main events of 1991. As fans of the Dexter-verse know, Dexter's adoptive father died in 1992, so that doesn't leave much time left for the character in Original Sin, or does it? During the promotional tour for Original Sin's debut season, Dexter: Original Sin's showrunner, Clyde Phillips, told Variety:

We talked with Christian about this a lot. When you see the whole season, all 10 episodes, it will have only taken place over two or three weeks. We can keep doing that until it is time to say goodbye to Harry, but we plan on keeping Christian and Harry around for a long time. It was the same thing with “New Blood.” It took place from just before Christmas to just after Christmas.

This strongly suggests that Original Sin's second season will probably take place soon after the events of the eventful first season, and it'll also be set over the course of a few weeks, to allow for more Harry Morgan-focused storylines. This is good news because fans will get to see more of Christian Slater, but it might irk others who are keen to see Original Sin eventually catch up with the original Dexter series timeline. Of course, it is inevitable that Harry will die on screen in a future season of Original Sin, and Dexter's dark passenger will have to manage without the guidance of his adoptive father. Having said that, this doesn't mean Christian Slater has to exit the show, as he could appear as Dexter's Ghost. As for Original Sin's second season, Harry Morgan will be very much alive and well, and that will more than likely be the case if a third season is picked up.
