Summary

  • Showrunner explains why Dr. Evelyn Vogel was left out of Original Sin’s first season.
  • Likely chance for Vogel to be retconned or appear in future seasons of the Dexter origin story.
  • It's probable Original Sin won't involve Vogel in Dexter’s backstory due to established history.

Dexter: Original Sin ended its first season last month in dramatic fashion, and the wait is now on to see if Paramount+ with Showtime pick it up for a sophomore season. Dexter's origin story delved deep into Dexter's past, and filed in the blanks about his mother, Laura Moser's death, while also showing how Dexter began his killing career. However, there was no mention or appearance by Dr Evelyn Vogel, who helped create Harry's code, but Original Sin's showrunner, Clyde Phillips, recently opened up about why that was.

Dr. Evelyn Vogel was played by Charlotte Rampling in the final season of the original Dexter series, and she ended up being brutally killed by her son, Oliver Saxon (a.k.a. The Brain Surgeon). Before that, Vogel told Dexter that she worked with his adoptive father, Harry Morgan, to find a way to channel Dexter's urges, so there is some potential backstory to explore with her character in Original Sin.

Clyde Phillips was typically candid about his decision to leave Dr. Evelyn Vogel out of the plans for the first season of Dexter: Original Sin, and it makes sense, and doesn't undo anything in the original Dexter series. In an interview with comicbook.com, Phillips stated:

It actually never came up. When we sit in the writing room, particularly when you’re doing a thriller, you need to know what the ending is. You put that on the wall and put your nose against it and you walk backward. Let’s say you’re in a hotel hallway, and you walk backward and each room you’re passing is an episode until you get over here. Then we also have something which we call NPO, no particular order, scenes we want to see. We write them up on a board and about 35 or 40 percent of them get in like that ice truck going by, but we don’t know what episode it’s going in. We work in the ones that fit into the story, but story is king and character is king. So, Dr. Vogel isn’t even in my consciousness, honestly.

There is a chance that an idea involving Vogel might have been raised by someone in the writer's room, but it didn't make the cut. However, it could be insinuated from Clyde Phillips comments that he isn't a huge fan of Vogel and that is why she wasn't included in Original Sin. After all, Phillips left Dexter after the epic fourth season featuring the Trinity Killer, and he had no part in creating the character of Vogel in the final season.

Original Sin Might Choose To Retcon The Vogel Character Or Introduce Her In A Future Season

Many fans think the character of Dr. Evelyn Vogel was a huge misstep in the Dexter-verse, because it lessened the impact of Harry Morgan creating the code that Dexter's dark passenger would follow. Harry's code was initially conceived as his own idea, and a dark secret that only father and son knew about. Vogel's introduction changed everything, and it's highly likely Original Sin will leave her out of Dexter's backstory altogether. Alternatively, she could be mentioned or appear in a future season if Original Sin is renewed. Vogel could turn up in the 1970's flashbacks to show how Harry Morgan came to her for help with Dexter's urges, or in the 1990s main timeline. If the latter option was chosen, Vogel wouldn't be able to come into contact with Dexter, as the pair didn't meet until much later on.

There are plenty more stories to tell about Dexter's early years in Original Sin, but there are many more pressing issues than revisiting the character of Dr. Evelyn Vogel. Clyde Phillips has a clear idea of what Dexter and Harry's relationship was like, and the intricacies of how they developed the code together. Introducing Vogel into the mix could be a classic case of two's company, three's a crowd.
