Every Devil May Cry Game, Ranked

The Devil May Cry franchise has had its hits and misses, but how exactly do all the games in the series rank up against each other?

4

Of course, everybody knows that the original five games featured numerous bosses that stood out due to their impeccable designs and their incredible abilities. Curiously enough, all the promotional material for the upcoming Devil May Cry show has already confirmed their appearance and, while some of them are no-brainers, others are a huge surprise.

While the lesser demon known as Plasma is more of a mini-boss than a big boss, it’s still infamous among players because of how tricky and challenging it is. Back in the original Devil May Cry, it could change forms in an instant to alter its movement and attack Dante with its sharp limbs.

Plasma has already been featured in numerous trailers and promotional images for the upcoming Netflix show, where it seems that it will be part of the White Rabbit’s demon army and that it will have a close battle with Dante. Nevertheless, it remains unconfirmed whether this will be one single Plasma or if more of them will appear together.

2 Mundus

The Iconic “Big Bad” Of The Devil May Cry Franchise

Mundus is one of (if not the) most important villains in the Devil May Cry franchise, as the ruler of the Demon World is single-handedly responsible for everything that happens in the story, from killing Dante’s parents to corrupting Vergil and creating Trish. He was the main antagonist and final boss of the first game, where he appeared as a giant winged statue in the shape of a bearded man.

Needless to say, DMC fans were ecstatic to see that Mundus was briefly featured in the Opening Credits of the upcoming Netflix show, but many wondered if he was going to have a role in the story or if this was just an interesting visual for the sequence. Fortunately, the most recent trailer confirmed that the Prince of Darkness will make an actual appearance in the animated show, although it’s extremely likely that he’ll just appear in flashbacks detailing Dante’s backstory.

When it comes to Devil May Cry bosses and weapons, few of them are as iconic and beloved as Agni and Rudra. Originally featured in the critically acclaimed Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, this is a pair of strong headless demons who wield elemental swords with fire and wind powers that contain their actual faces on their pommels. Their fight is quite challenging but rewarding, as it gives Dante (and the player) access to the Agni and Rudra swords, which are among some of the most fun weapons to use in the game.

Devil May Cry: 8 Biggest Traditions In The Series

Simply put, it wouldn't be a Devil May Cry game without these iconic traditions making an appearance in one way or another.

The trailers and posters for the Netflix animated series confirmed that Agni and Rudra will appear in it, and that they will fight Dante together. But fans were quick to notice something odd: they both have their heads on their torsos, instead of in the pommels of their respective swords. This is a major drastic design change, but it’s also quite possible that the show will try to explain that they lost their heads after Dante inevitably defeated them, resulting in their original in-game design.

4 Lady

One Of The Most Important Female Characters In The Series

The human Devil Hunter, simply known as Lady, is arguably the most prominent female character in the series, as she was heavily featured in Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening as a key player in the plot and as one of the main bosses of the adventure. She has a very tragic backstory that connects her with her father, Arkham, not to mention that she’s quite efficient at fighting with different guns.

Lady was one of the first characters who Adi Shankar and Netflix confirmed would appear in the new Devil May Cry show. This time around, it seems that she will be part of some sort of task force that’s meant to capture Dante, which is quite different from her appearance and role in the games. However, it’s apparent that her dynamic with the protagonist will remain intact and that she will likely play a big part in the story, especially when considering the rumors that Arkham will also appear in the upcoming series.

While Devil May Cry 4 is quite a flawed and divisive video game, there’s no denying that it has one of the best and most memorable collections of bosses in the series. One of them is Echidna the She-Viper, a giant serpentine demoness that protects the great forest with her incredible plant-based powers and her violent personality.

In the game, she fights both Nero and Dante in two challenging encounters, before the latter eventually kills her in Mission 13. Curiously enough, however, Echidna has been prominently featured in multiple promotional images and videos for the new Netflix animated shows, where she will seemingly fight Dante as part of the White Rabbit’s demonic army, alongside Plasma, Agni and Rudra.

2019’s Devil May Cry 5 is often considered the best game in the franchise, so it is no surprise that its many bosses are still fondly remembered by fans. One of the most notorious ones is Cavaliere Angelo, a humanoid demon with a destructive electric sword who stars in an extremely tense and challenging fight. But defeating him is also very rewarding, as it will allow Dante to wield his over-the-top motorcycle weapon, which is fittingly named Cavaliere.

Dante from three games
Devil May Cry: Every Version Of Dante, Ranked

There's been a handful of different iterations of Dante in the Devil May Cry series, but which is the best of them all?

By

Since the new Devil May Cry animated series will take place in its own timeline, many fans thought it was only going to feature characters and bosses from the first and third games, so it was a breath of fresh air seeing Cavalerie Angelo from DMC5 being prominently featured in the trailers, posters and opening credits. It’s important to point out that, in the game, he uses Lady as his host/battery, so it’s very possible that the very same scenario will transpire in the show and that Dante will have to save her.

7 Vergil

The Most Iconic And Beloved Antagonist Of The Franchise

There’s no denying that Vergil is one of the most popular Devil May Cry characters, only second to Dante himself. Mundus may be the “big bad” of this story, but Dante’s twin brother has been a recurring menace throughout many different titles, in which he captivated audiences with his slick design, cool personality and extremely hard boss battles. On top of that, he was even added as a playable character in the Special Editions of the third, fourth and fifth games.

DMC fans spent many months wondering if Vergil was going to make an appearance in the new Netflix show, and the newest trailer finally confirmed (or spoiled) it. Yes, Vergil will appear in the animated series, although he will be voiced by Robbie Daymond instead of Dan Southworth. Nevertheless, this is great news because the intense rivalry between Dante and Vergil is one of the best aspects of Devil May Cry’s narrative, and it will hopefully result in some incredible animated fight scenes between the two brothers.
