Typically, each Year of Destiny 2 brings one new major destination, one to two six-player raids, one to two three-player dungeons, and various other match-made activities that can be completed to earn weapons and gear that will help raise the player's power level. The Max Power cap is expected to receive a substantial increase in The Edge of Fate, as players take on more powerful foes and acquire valuable loot.

Initially, The Edge of Fate was known as Codename: Apollo, which is part of Destiny 2's Codename: Frontiers plan for 2025 and beyond. Codename: Frontiers includes The Edge of Fate and another expansion, Codename: Behemoth, which is launching sometime in winter 2025.
