- Bungie confirmed that the upcoming Episode: Revenant will release all of its story beats at once, due to player feedback on pacing issues.
The Destiny 2 community is frustrated with spoilers involving the Final Shape expansion, as many players who are catching up with the story have already been spoiled about the expansion's ending. As a result, some Destiny 2 players are calling on Bungie to make some changes to the way the game's story is told in the future.
After the release of Destiny 2: The Final Shape, Bungie released the game's first Episode, Echoes, on June 11 to mark the beginning of a new story. Echoes delves into the aftermath of the battle against the Witness, as players attempt to solve the mystery of Echoes, strange matter scattered across the solar system. Guardians head to Nessus alongside Osiris and Saint-14 to investigate the matter, and the services of Failsafe are enlisted once more. The first Act's weekly release schedule has not been well received by veteran players, and it appears that Echoes' opening cinematic is causing problems for new players as well.
Before starting a run of the Dares of Eternity activity in Destiny 2, Reddit user Jcorb was spoiled about the story of The Final Shape and the ramifications of the Witness' defeat in a cinematic, despite not being caught up with the story. After the cinematic played, Jcorb was placed in a quest for Echoes Act 1, and they weren't pleased with having been spoiled immediately after logging in. Jcorb shared this experience with the Destiny 2 Reddit community and demanded that Bungie make changes to the way its story is told, and many other players chimed in with their own experiences. SrslySam91 is one of hundreds of users that agree with Jcorb's sentiment, stating that players being thrown into seasonal activities is indicative of flawed story design.
Destiny 2 Fans are Upset with Bungie Spoiling The Final Shape to New Players in Echoes Cinematic and Quest
Although many players in the community enjoy Destiny 2's story, the delivery of the episodic story leads some to believe that the game's live-service format hinders the experience for new and returning players. Some players also associate Bungie's handling of past DLC expansions, including the implementation of the Destiny Content Vault, with being part of the problem. According to Jcorb, a potential solution could be a "Story" tab in the game's directory, allowing players to view cinematics and other story-related content they willingly wish to view, regardless of progress.
At the very least, Bungie recently confirmed that the story beats of Destiny 2 Episode 2: Revenant will be made available in its entirety at the start of each Act, instead of weekly story releases. Player feedback involving story pacing led Bungie to make this major story change, so it's possible that additional changes could be made if the community continues to be vocal.
