Bungie has revealed that Destiny 2 will receive a slew of new PvP content in Season 23 after receiving frequent feedback and requests from players. Destiny 2 will continue to receive substantial updates leading into the release of the Final Shape expansion in 2024, and Bungie appears to have a renewed focus in developing content for the Crucible.
Destiny 2 Year 6 began with the launch of the Lightfall expansion this past February. August 2023 marks the halfway point for the latest year of Destiny 2, and Season 22 is expected to launch near the end of the month. Bungie is aware of the strong fan demand for new PvP maps and content, and the next two seasons appear to address the community's most desired requests for Destiny 2.
Bungie released an extensive State of the Game blog post to detail the new content coming soon to Destiny 2, including several PvP updates for Season 22 and 23. Iron Banner will receive a new mode in Destiny 2 Season 23 according to Bungie, but further details regarding the mode were not revealed. This new Iron Banner Mode will likely include rewards and returning weapons from Destiny 2 Season 22, however. Additionally, a new Hakke Aggressive Frame Strand Pulse Rifle will be available as a Competitive division weapon reward in Season 23.
Forsaken's Citadel map will also make its return to Crucible playlists in Season 23 as part of Bungie's "reprisal map efforts" for Destiny 2. Currently, the development team is undergoing the porting process for the Citadel map and hopes to relive "fond memories of dominating Control matches" in the Dreaming City during Season 23.
Although Bungie didn't share specific details about the new Season 23 content, the future of Destiny 2's PvP modes looks very promising so far. The Citadel and Multiplex maps bring much-needed variety to the current map rotation in the Crucible, and Season 23's new Iron Banner mode might incentivize more players to try out PvP and seek out powerful limited-time rewards.
Bungie could bring more players into its PvP playlists by continuing to introduce new maps and content in The Final Shape and subsequent seasons. For those interested in learning more about Destiny 2's new offerings, more details about the new expansion and the game's next season will be revealed in the Destiny 2 Showcase on August 22.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
