Prior to the release of the Edge of Fate expansion for Destiny 2, players can jump into a new limited-time event, the Rite of the Nine, that serves as an introduction to the expansion. Not only does this event set the stage for Destiny 2’s Fate saga, it also gives players a chance to earn some top-tier loot and other notable rewards. Unfortunately, though, the Rite of the Nine event is only expected to be available until the Edge of Fate expansion releases on July 15.
Given how good the rewards from the Rite of the Nine event are, there is a strong case for this activity to become a permanent addition to Destiny 2. Removing the event also risks alienating newer players by leaving them out of the loop on the game’s lore, as Rite of the Nine is intended to serve as an introduction to the next chapter of Destiny 2’s story. With the Onslaught activity from Destiny 2’s Into the Light event being made a permanent game mode, it could be argued that the new Rite of the Nine event deserves this same treatment, but for its own reasons.
2025 Is Quickly Proving That Destiny Has Outgrown Itself
Destiny’s design has become a blueprint for modern shooters, with some of 2025's most anticipated titles drawing inspiration from its formula.
The Case For Destiny 2’s Rite of the Nine Event to Become a Permanent Activity
- The three dungeons in the Rite of the Nine event will remain in the game, but they may not be worth revisiting if the top-tier rewards from this event are no longer available.
- Since the Rite of the Nine event serves as an introduction to the Edge of Fate expansion and Destiny 2’s Fate saga, players may be missing out on important lore and context for this new chapter of the game’s story if this event is removed.
- Destiny 2’s history of removing content is a long-running issue, and the Rite of the Nine event can remedy this by becoming a permanent or returning game mode.
Rite of the Nine is One of the Most Rewarding Events in Destiny 2
Both in terms of quality and quantity, the rewards from Destiny 2’s Rite of the Nine event are noteworthy. The highlights of the rewards from this event are updated versions of legendary weapons from the three dungeons that are featured in the activity. These weapons have new perk rolls, a new Origin perk, and rare Adept and Holofoil versions for players to hunt down.
There are also new Emblems, a Shader, and a Title for players to earn by completing Triumphs within the event, as well as several IRL collector's items from the Bungie Store.
Thanks to these rewards, players finally have a good reason to revisit the pre-existing dungeons that are featured in the event. If the Rite of the Nine event leaves and makes the updated legendary weapons and other rewards unavailable, these dungeons may, once again, not be worth visiting. Ultimately, keeping these three dungeons as worthwhile endgame activities after the release of the Edge of Fate expansion could be good for Destiny 2, as it would give players a wider variety of activities to engage with.
Destiny 2’s Rite of the Nine Event Sets the Stage for a Brand New Saga
Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness saga is coming to an end, and the Fate saga will soon begin. This new chapter of storytelling will finally put the spotlight on the mysterious Nine of Destiny 2’s universe, starting with Orin, the emissary of the Nine.
Yet, while the bits of information revealed through the Rite of the Nine event are likely only a drop in the bucket compared to how vast this new chapter of Destiny 2’s ongoing story will turn out to be, this initial preview still serves a vital role in setting the stage for the new Fate saga. So, the lore offered by the Rite of the Nine event is something that players won’t want to miss, and they should still get a chance to experience it even after the new saga has already begun.
