Destiny 2: Shadowkeep brings with it a collection of new exotics, including the Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo is an exotic auto rifle that was originally in Destiny 1 and has made its way back to the Destiny 2 with the release of Shadowkeep. The perks are very similar to the original version of it in the first game, which benefits players' melee ability.

First, there is no guaranteed way to get Monte Carlo. It does not have its own quest like the new Deathbringer exotic rocket launcher does but the weapon will instead come from Exotic Engrams that players find while making their way through the game. So, this will be one of those exotics that players will need to rely on their luck and the game's RNG systems to give to them.

The good news is, players will have some guaranteed recurring sources of exotics in the game. Usually, the chance is higher of getting an exotic in the raid, such as the new Garden of Salvation raid. Also, the highest difficulty levels of the new Nightfall: The Ordeal special difficulty version of the weekly Nightfall has a higher chance, and exotics may even be guaranteed for the hardest 980 level of the Ordeal Nightfall. That means Nightfall: The Ordeal may be one of the best places for players to farm for exotics week after week for the Monte Carlo if they are not getting it from other drops elsewhere in the game. Players who paid for the season pass will also receive Exotic Engrams at certain rank ups, which could be another source for Monte Carlo.

As for the perks, Monte Carlo's special perks are Monte Carlo Method and Markov Chain:

  • Monte Carlo Method: Dealing damage with this weapon reduces your melee cooldown and grants a chance to fully charge your melee ability with each kill.
  • Markov Chain: This weapon gains increased damage from melee kills and kills with this weapon. Melee kills grant ammo for this weapon.

As is obvious, Monte Carlo is focused on giving players a buff to their melee, with kills from the weapon reduces the recharge rate or even instantly recharging players' melee ability upon a kill. Melee kills will also grant ammo back into Monte Carlo and buff its damage. This should create a gameplay loop with the weapon where players go back and forth between killing enemies with Monte Carlo and their melee abilities.

Combine this with some exotic armor that grants an additional melee charge, such as the Hunter's Ophidia Spathe, and players could put together a crazy melee-focused build. Or, a build centered around Monte Carlo may be especially attractive to Hunter Nightstalkers who can gain many more of their unique melee ability, Smoke Bombs.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
