One creative Destiny 2 player is shifting genres and sharing their vision of what the popular first-person shooter would like as a kart racing game. It calls to mind the long-gone Destiny 1 Sparrow Racing League feature.
The Sparrow Racing League, or SRL, was first introduced in what is considered by most as Destiny 1’s best DLC, The Taken King, as a limited-time event. It was so popular that Bungie made the event permanent a year later in the Rise of Iron expansion. With the release of Destiny 2, the Sparrow Racing League was just one of the many things, including weapons and shaders, that did not carry over from Destiny 1. During the first year that Destiny 2 was released, there was a rumor that Bungie would be bringing back Sparrow Racing League, but that went nowhere.
In a post on the Destiny 2 subreddit, user Rabbidscool shared with the community several images that envision what the game would be like as a racing kart game similar to the well-loved Mario Kart. The images were created using Dall.E 3, a generative AI platform. In the photos, the Traveler is featured heavily in the background, with Guardians racing on tracks and environments reminiscent of Destiny 2.
The images were well received on the subreddit, with other users either reminiscing about SRL or noticing hilarious features such as one Hunter using a stasis turret on their kart. Users on the thread started to wonder what a season dedicated to Sparrow Racing League would be like, with some suggesting various power-ups based on supers to getting sponsored by the different weapon foundries in the game. However, despite Destiny 2 players wanting the Sparrow Racing League to make a return, most agreed it was unlikely that Bungie would dedicate an entire season to just one activity.
However, over the years, many fan favorites, such as weapons and even PvP modes and maps, returned to Destiny 2, and with the game entering its final arc, players are still hoping that SRL may return. While the verdict is still out on whether or not the mode will make a return even as a temporary event, Bungie has been known to surprise players with new activities from time to time, so fans still have a glimmer of hope.
Destiny 2 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
